Set a neutral scene in cam, calibrate all monitors correctly & then literally just monitor accordingly. Your eyes will show you a light that’s blowing hot or cold, creative direction should have been selected by this point but always approach adaptively.

Gels are now built into alot of light fixture of today - You can dial in the shade you want and go for it. Gels and pantyhose, vaseline, broken glass can all be used to alter the final image and expression. Consider your production schedule and budget do you want to make creative looks /use LUTS on the front end of the project and set the baseline for the images - or do you want flexibility in post to dig ino various creative tools that might help director or client capture their intended vision.

There are a number of hard & fast rules on this but always apply realistic sense - a hot light source won’t show any info just the same as a pitch black hole. Always grey card/white balance your scene & try retaining as much dynamic range as possible, know your environment & operating rig. There are a load of useful in camera/monitor tools to assist you getting a neutral & well exposed capture - your eyes being the greatest.

One thing I have personally found, is there is no wrong or right way to use gels and filters (as long as you don't overheat and melt them :-D ). Filters are like your personal color pallet. You are the artist, and your vision, along with serving the needs of the film and video, needs to be the focus in all of your filmmaking or video production tools.
