You are absolutely right. Data quality is one of the most important aspects of data integration projects. Without high-quality data, the results of the project will be unreliable and the insights gained will be limited. To ensure data quality, you can establish data quality standards, implement data quality checks and validation processes, assign roles and responsibilities for data quality management, and monitor and report on data quality performance. You can also use data profiling tools to identify data quality issues, clean the data by correcting errors and removing duplicates, document the data quality standards and procedures that you have implemented, and train your staff on data quality issues.

In integration projects, data issues ,missing, inaccurate, and inconsistent information pose challenges. Duplicates and governance lapses hinder quality, while security concerns and external dependencies add complexity. Timeliness and transformation errors can impede processes. Scalability becomes an issue with growing data volumes. Mitigate these challenges through comprehensive measures: employ data profiling to identify anomalies, establish robust governance practices, and implement continuous monitoring. Addressing these aspects enhances data quality, ensuring reliable and accurate insights in integrated systems.

Some important considerations to mitigate these risks could be : 1. Encryption : Protects data by converting it into an unreadable format using a secret key or algorithm. 2. Authentication: Verifies the source and integrity of data, ensuring it's from a trustworthy origin and hasn't been tampered with. 3. Authorization: Controls data access using predefined rules, determining who can use or modify data and under what conditions. 4. Auditing: Monitors and records data-related activities, including usage, quality, and changes over time. 5. Backup: Stores duplicate data in a separate location to recover from accidental deletion, corruption, or loss. These are vital for a data engineer to consider at every step of the pipeline.

I agree that a Data Governance(DG) strategy is important at the enterprise level. However, lack of an enterprise level DG strategy should not be an excuse for lack of DG consideration in your integration project. It sure supports an easier implementation if there is a broader DG strategy to follow but minimally, you should ensure there is provision for cataloging, mapping, data quality and lineage documentation as part of the data integration project consideration. Efforts to create an enterprise level DG program is heavy and may overwhelm or derail an integration project if it becomes a prerequisite.

One thing I have found useful is to ensure that there is a data governance strategy being implemented in the organization. This has to be top down and an investment that is proportional to the size of the organization and the current maturity of the data org. It's about people, process and technology. You cannot do it without significant investment from the people who are in the business roles, that develop the processes they will follow and finally to augment that with a technology solution.

In simple words, integration projects have following challenges... 1. Source and target systems availability 2. Data reconciliation between source and target system data 3. Middleware downtimes 4. Monitoring and notifications of Jobs/schedules 5. Real-time / Near real-time data availability(SLA) 6. Changes in source system which may also lead to change in integration process. 7. Spike in volume of data replicating from source to target system. 8. Complex data Transformations, which may lead to performance issues. 9. Maintenance of mappings either in source or target systems or inside middleware. 10. Sync back from target system to source system.

Data Integration projects should also include having a clear understanding of both source and destination platforms. From a Data Governance perspective, a well defined data dictionary can play a key role. I would add that having a Business Requirements Document (BRD) will be essential for all parties involved. It will provide clarity around the project goals, as well as have solid definition for each component of the integration that will be reviewed and agreed upon. By having these in place prior to the execution of the project, you increase your chances for achieving higher levels of success.
