This means they are not your own and that the trend is not beginning with your visual communication. How do you make it your own? Merge it with something else that inspires you and is historically proven.

Art books provide rich visual histories and contexts, offering a deep dive into styles and techniques that I can adapt or respond to in my own work. Design magazines, on the other hand, keep me updated on current trends and the innovative work of contemporary designers. Both are invaluable resources that fuel my creativity and broaden my understanding of visual aesthetics.

One day after staring at my screen for countless hours, stressing over minutia, and wondering how I could possibly dig any deeper for more ideas, I decided to step outside and take a walk. The results I was getting on Illustrator were so lifeless and bleak, I wondered how I could possibly make anything in this project delight a customer, let alone myself. After walking for a few minutes, the sounds, movement, and scents of my street were flooding and my mind was racing. Ideas snapped into my head without the endless doomscroll of inspiration feeding. It then occurred to me that our design culture is so inundated with "inspo" and moodboards that nothing is allowed to flow outward first. Try stepping out regularly. It really helps.

People rely on old cues to understand what they're looking at, but are then excited by the unique. Remind them that behind the conventional is an honest and authentic humanity. If they walk away with the clarity of a convention and the recognition of authenticity, you have won the day.
