What are some of the best practices and tips for motion design beginners?

You are gonna spend a lot of time learning software and running into bugs and issues. This can be very frustrating. To get through this, it's essential to be inspired and passionate about the things you create.

Ask yourself what drives you the most - the commercial industry, television promos, video games, interactive and 3d stuff or maybe plain and old-school animation. That way you can decide what actions to take towards your goal career.

I always felt like it was cheating, but the client needs that projects done yesterday.

With learning the basics I would say be open to the idea that you won't be great at every part of being a motion designer. Once that reality syncs in it becomes less overwhelming.

Then I studied all the great motion design pieces that I came across. Really thinking about why this piece works so well as a whole - what does the motion convey and how does it help the story through timing, easing, and movement direction? School of Motion, Ben Marriot, Andrew Kramer have some great insights and have a great repository of tutorials.

Don't make the mistake of chasing the fanciest tools and plug-ins right away. Learn the bootstrapped way of doing things and try to do the most with the things you have. My recommendation: Learn AE and Blender, they go together well and you'll be able to create basically anything you want.

Honestly all you need to know is AE and Blender. Don't try to learn both at the same time, it will be too overwhelming. Cinema 4D is amazing but don't pay for it at the beginning. If you're full time, get your job to pay for it. If you can't get someone else to pay for it, learn Blender. Lottie is basically a file format for animation, you can export it out from AE. And yes, its important to know. The common denominator is After Effects though, any aspiring motion designer should start there.

Maybe there is a new career path emerging in motion design, which we can refer to as UX Motion Designer and the technology that will dominate this field is Rive. If I were starting out, I would not hesitate to learn as much as possible about it.

It's very easy when you start developing a new skill to over-prepare. People that are more seasoned often want cram things into a project to prove they can do everything, they will only display what absolutely supports the story and the presentation of the visuals.

These basics will ensure your animations are not only attractive but also clear and effective. When you progress to actual motion, pace yourself. After Effects is the industry standard software program. It's required learning. It will take years to master and fully understand. But don't let that be intimidating, enjoy the journey. Learn something new each project, no matter how small. Get to know the Geaph Editor really well, it will make your animations stand out. AE is huge, opaque, complicated and has been around for 20 years; instead of redesigning it, Adobe keeps adding features. If you get overwhelmed, remember this program is one of the most complicated pieces of software that exist in the creative world; it's not you, it's the program.

I found that personal projects are one of the best ways to learn. When you have a specific project, you're in problem-solving mode, figuring out how to bring your ideas to life. Instead of passively watching tutorials, you apply what you've learned, solidifying your knowledge and sharpening your skills.

School of Motion is worth the investment to get started in motion design if you're looking to be a pro. Jake in Motion on YouTube has a great section called "The Effects of After Effects" that gives great explainers on what all the base effects are in AE and how to use them.

Getting better takes time. The best thing you can do is a lot of work. Create, create, and create some more. The more work you do: the more you will come to find what works and what doesn't.

What I have seen happening a lot with my fellow colleagues is that they get burned out on personal projects. Therefore my advice would be make it compact and set clear goals before starting!
