You cannot get to where you want to go if you don't know where you currently are. A risk assessment is necessary to define a starting point so that you know what needs to be updated. Otherwise you are applying generic security initiatives that may or may not be required for your industry. There is a base level of cyber security that is industry agnostic, however there are some initiatives that are specific to some industries but not required for all

Particularly in the case of confidentiality, it is paramount that not only who has access but what level of access those parties have is clearly defined and tracked. Not only does this limit the potential risk, it also provides an audit trail in the event that bad actors are successful in accessing data. Availability is a very important consideration that provides a balanced approach to cyber security. Companies can implement cyber security initiatives which greatly reduce risk but also greatly hinder productivity. This is apparent in cases where companies resist utilizing cloud technologies to maintain security. Yes risk decreases, but this also limits employees ability to work remotely.

IT security and data protection are not achieved by a single measure or tool, but by a combination of multiple layers of defense that work together to prevent, detect, and respond to different types of attacks. Arguably one of the most important layers of cyber security is end-user education. End users must understand not only the impact of a compromise, but also how to identify potential threats and how to respond to them. There are many people who simply do not understand the risks of cyber security and believe it will "never happen to me". There is also a segment of people who fail to report a threat, either because they don't think it's that big of a deal, or they don't want to be reprimanded. Training of end users must cover multiple areas: - The impact that cyber security threats pose, not just to the business but to the individual - How to identify potential threats - What to do if they suspect a threat or have been compromised

5 Comply with the regulations

IT security and data protection are not only technical issues, but also legal and ethical ones. IT consultants should comply with the relevant regulations and standards that govern the collection, processing, storage, transfer, and disposal of information systems and data. Companies should consider third party reviews of their cyber security. Whether utilizing an in-house team or a third party vendor, companies tend to put great trust into those professionals to manage cyber-security. However the impact of a compromise can be devastating, even affecting the continuity of the organization. For this reason a third party audit of cyber security should be done on a regular basis as a check.

One component that often gets missed when discussing cyber security is insurance policies. Regardless of how well protected from threats that an organization is, there is no guarantee that they will not be compromised. For this reason organization must ensure that they have adequate coverage and that all boxes are checked so that they are actually provided coverage if they make a claim. Preventative measures are key, but if compromised, organizations must be have adequate coverage to avoid financial ruin.
