Clearly understand the end usage for graphics when starting a project (when possible) and when exporting production files. Understanding the end use will help to economize your process and keep you from wasting your valuable (read: time = money) time. For example, exporting a layout for a billboard? Billboards don't require 300dpi files and building/exporting them at that resolution would result in unnecessarily large files. Most print vendors have specifications available and some even have production templates. Ask for those things up front whenever possible.
