While this may seem basic, it's extremely important to have a way to reach everyone involved on the day of the shoot. If you've been communicating through an agent or via email, make sure you have a cell phone number for your talent where they can be reached that day. If travelling separately, let them know exact location, directions, & parking information (if applicable).

I would add: What ever you transmit to talent will have an echo. If you speak with anxiety or desperation instead of calmly and in a controlled polite way it may affect talent either way.

Directing talent on location also requires you to follow the ethics and the best practices of field production. Be honest, and do not misrepresent or manipulate your talent, or the audience. Be respectful, and do not exploit or harm your talent, or the environment. Be responsible, and obtain the necessary permissions, releases, and credits for your talent, and the location. Be professional, and abide by the laws, regulations, and codes of conduct of your industry.

For a successful field shoot with talent (who are often juggling many shows and stories), maybe do a fact finding shoot first. Review the shots and interview themes with your talent, and get their perspective on where they think the story should go. Often talent has very limited time in the field, so its important to make every moment count. Put 4-5 key questions on large index cards. If you have just one camera, camera should be on the anchor for the key questions. If you can get two or three cameras the edit will be much easier.. Keep the questions short. Make sure to budget time for b-roll of interaction between the subject and your anchor.
