One thing I have seen is the desire to cast a wide net and provide as many learning options as possible. But sometimes, too many options can be a barrier to learners and lead to Choice Paralysis where individuals are given with too many choices and become overwhelmed. Even when your learners ARE able to choose from all the options, they wont have the mental energy left to learn effectively. As Learning and Development professionals, we have a role to act as curators who understand the goals of the community to take some of those choices out of the hands of the learner. In the end, this will help them find the right training options quickly and learn effectively.

Taking the time to understand the current capabilities of the learners and where they hope to gain knowledge is important. You don’t want to be halfway through developing your content and realize it’s too rudimentary or something along those lines.

When selecting a platform and tools for your online learning community, you should consider several factors, such as the size, diversity, and preferences of your learners, the type and frequency of communication and collaboration, the availability and accessibility of technology, and the budget and resources. Usability, functionality, interoperability, security, and support are all important aspects to consider. The platform and tools should be easy to use and navigate for both learners and facilitators. They should also support desired features such as discussion forums, chat rooms, video conferencing, file sharing, polls, quizzes etc. Additionally, they should be compatible with other systems and devices that your learners use. Furthermore, they should protect the privacy and data of your learners while complying with regulations and standards. Finally, they should provide adequate technical and customer support for your learners and facilitators.

One thing I've found helpful when deciding on platforms and tools is understanding not just what the learners and facilitators need, but alos the ease with which your system administrators can get the useful information they need to keep improving outcomes. Reporting and data collection on the back end is just as valuable a function as anything else!

This should include outlining roles and responsibilities for learners, facilitators, and other stakeholders. It should also specify the level and frequency of participation and engagement expected from learners, such as how often they should log in, post, comment, or collaborate. Additionally, etiquette and behavior rules should be established to ensure appropriate and respectful conduct in the online learning community. This could include communicating in a clear, polite, and constructive manner, avoiding spamming, flaming, trolling, or plagiarism, as well as handling conflicts and disagreements appropriately.

Additionally, facilitators should design, assign, and monitor collaborative tasks, provide clear instructions and expectations, facilitate group formation and dynamics, and address any issues or conflicts. All of these tasks help facilitate a welcoming environment that promotes teamwork.

We often forget what works offline when we are online. If we were hosting a community at an in-person facility, there are all sorts of things we'd do to spark energy, set a tone, foster connection, and have fun. Don't forget these elements when you facilitate online. Ask yourself: -What would surface the current or shared energy of the group? -How could I structure ways for people to get to know one another? -Am I bringing in humor, fun, creativity, or connection in addition to the learning content? -What's my part in role modeling the behavior I want to see in others? -How do I ensure psychological safety and a welcoming environment for people of all backgrounds?

5 Evaluate the outcomes and feedback

The last practice for creating and managing online learning communities is to evaluate the outcomes and feedback of the community. This involves measuring the performance and impact of the online learning community, comparing the results with predefined objectives and indicators, and identifying strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and challenges.
