1 Input Data Quality

For me, this is one of the biggest risks and flaws with the use of any modelling software n geotechnics. Being able to adequately derive a geotechnical model for a slope is the priority. If this is not completed and its sensitivity considered, then the modelling could well be worthless.

2 Failure Criteria

Another limitation of SLOPE/W is that it uses the limit equilibrium method to calculate the factor of safety and the location of the potential failure surface. This method assumes that the soil behaves as a rigid-plastic material and that the failure surface is fully mobilized. However, in reality, the soil may have some elasticity and strain-softening behavior, and the failure surface may not be well-defined. Therefore, you should always use appropriate failure criteria for your soil type and condition, and be aware of the assumptions and limitations of the limit equilibrium method.

3 Spatial Variability

A third limitation of SLOPE/W is that it does not account for the spatial variability of the soil properties and the groundwater conditions. This means that it assumes that the soil parameters and the pore water pressures are uniform and constant within each soil layer or region. However, in reality, the soil properties and the groundwater conditions may vary significantly across the slope, due to heterogeneity, anisotropy, weathering, erosion, seepage, or other factors.
