What skills do you seek in sports management graduates?

When I was with the NBA we were looking for Academic Excellence and a demonstrated ability to get down to work. A passion for basketball was perhaps overstated. There are lots of fans. Confidence and Communication Skills are essential, both in writing and speaking. Initiative and Drive. Some technical skills - Which nowadays would be data analysis, coding, or marketing- helps.

If you are employed, put yourself in the shoes of the investors. And think like an entrepreneur with the heart for success. Have sleepless nights on how to improve the business you find yourself in. Comb the earth, the internet to come up with innovative strategies to attract and sustain clients.

I don't believe you need to be a sports fan or a current or former athlete to land a job in sports. It's more important that you understand the business of sports if you are pursuing a business position. Yes, it's helpful to have a natural passion for sports that peaks your interest continually, but hiring is based on what you can bring to the organization, not how much passion you have for the underlying product. Read, watch and educate yourself on the relevant sports and their products with an eye to how the business is run, who the constituents are and what is important to them. So if you're not an athlete or a sports fan, don't worry. You can learn what you need to. Focus on the relevant skills and market data you will need to excel.

Apart of giftedness of skills, and acumen, is an unassuming lighter. The skillful are not the only stars there's in any field of sports. But genuine passion for a sports makes individuals stars in many ways, hence worth celebrating. You will work behind scenes, you will work in the dirty parts, you can only shine when you have clean passion for the sports you are championing. Passion is the pedal that propels involvements. Be resolute and a freedom fighter. One thing I have discovered is that leaders must be the voice for the voiceless. There are many situations where employees have genuine issues that needs to be addressed by CEOs or employers. Those employees that work close to the CEOs or employers most time keep out about the ordeals of the junior employees. They don't add their voices to the appeals to make working conditions better. This may be in fear of losing their positions or being fired. Leaders must think and act differently, they must be the voice for the voiceless, and at the same time set the standards right. Leaders must be free, fair, and firm at all levels and with everyone one in the organization.
