What should you update on your resume after an unsuccessful job interview?

After an unsuccessful job interview, update your resume by incorporating any newly identified skills, experiences, or insights gained from the interview process. This might involve adding relevant skills, highlighting achievements discussed during the interview, and aligning your resume keywords with those emphasized by the employer. In my experience, it is crucial to provide a compelling and relevant professional summary that highlights your key achievements and skills that you can use to excel on the job. This will give recruiters confidence in your ability to deliver because remember, if it's not a psychometric test or practical interview, you're better off putting more effort into selling yourself in the summary.

I encourage my Job Search clients to look at their CV/Resume like this. It is a story. It's an introductory story the prospective employer initially gets to know about who you are, what you've studied, what you did, what you can do and what your personality is like to see if you are a fit for who they want. You write this story in response to the question (which is in the job post) about whether you can do this job. Any 'kink' in that story is going to distort the picture they have of you and they could mistakenly dismiss you. Re-read your 'story' (your CV/Resume) and see if has a logical story-like flow. Where it does not, fix that part, but again, it might change the story if you do. Hard as it is I always recommend a complete rewrite.

An unsuccessful interview doesn't necessarily mean your resume is the problem. It's misleading to link interview failure directly to the resume. A better question post-interview is to reflect on what went wrong. This could include issues like poor preparation, weak communication skills, or unprofessional behavior. Each interview offers a unique learning opportunity to identify improvement areas and seek feedback. Engaging in this reflection and feedback cycle is key to enhancing future interview performance.

The way i see it there are 2 steps to note: 1- What mistake/lack/fix did your mind catch: If you didn't catch it on that same interview moment, go back to your mind on a later stage on that same day, and review the event and try to find it. 2- Before leaving the interview or somewhere in time after, make sure you ask the interviewer to give you his feedback about you; you'll be surprised sometimes with what you'll hear. It is a very productive thing to do and highly personal and business developing. After that, If the interviewer's feedback was not of a benefit to your CV, at least you got to understand how he sees things from a point of interviewer's view and this is a plus for you in the future.

Reflect on the feedback you received during the interview and identify any skills or qualifications that you may need to enhance. Update your resume to highlight any relevant skills or qualifications that you may have overlooked previously.

If you are invited to an interview I would say that genuinely your resume has done it's main job to get you there! If your application is rejected after the interview, the best way is to respectfully ask the interviewer to provide a feedback as to why this is the case. Unfortunately, the reality is that if you get a feedback, it will be most likely be a very general one that wont tell you the real cause for the rejection. What you can do to help yourself is to record the interview or at least to write the questions, so that you can asses if your resume has oversold you, or equally unpleasant undersold you for the role.

Tailor your resume to better align with the specific requirements and preferences of the company and position you're applying for. Make sure your resume effectively communicates how your skills and experiences make you a strong fit for the role.

Mapping the resume/CV to the keywords in the job description should be a top priority, regardless of the outcome of the interview. Every candidate must have a resume and CV. 1. Resume as a short document to keep track of the things that one can project. 2. CV/Resume which is optimiswd and mapped as per the industry/ organisational requirement.

Pay attention to the language used in the job description and during the interview. Update your resume to include relevant keywords and phrases that align with the requirements of the position.

Key word optimization involves identifying the specific skills and experiences mentioned in the job description and incorporating them into your resume. This not only shows that you have read and understood the job requirements, but also highlights your qualifications for the role. Carefully read the job description and identifying key words and phrases that are mentioned multiple times or stand out as important qualifications. Take a look at your resume and see if those key words are already included. If not, find ways to incorporate them into your work experience and skills section. Be specific and showcase your proficiency in these areas. Many companies use ATS to filter through resumes before they even reach the hiring manager.

Your CV or resume from my experience is rarely the reason you would not be successful in an interview. Try to look at the whole recruitment process to try and understand where you may not have ticked criteria for employers… Ensure you obtain feedback following an interview, ask for specific feedback or coaching opportunities to understand where you can improve. Giving specific contextual examples which demonstrate your experience and a reflective approach to professional situations is a massive help for any interview.

You LinkedIn profile and your resume, have a very straight goal to raise the recruiters interest, and to land you the opportunity to present your profile and your value to the employer. If you get invited to interviews and your presentation is good, and you can only do small adjustments, like add skills and/or achievements that better underline your ability to preform the desired job. Rejection at the interview phase is more likely related to your interviewing skills and this is where you must focus now!

The resume isn't for the interview. The resume is to get a callback from the recruiter. If you've had an unsuccessful interview, it's your interview skills that need tweaking...not your resume.

The time to adjust the résumé is not after an interview but rather before candidates apply for a role because the résumé's purpose is to open doors and to spark interest in someone's experience and background to meet a need. Writing well-crafted thank you notes to interviewers, reviewing what went well and what can be improved in future interviews, and staying connected with the organization until and after they make a hiring decision are better uses of the time right after the interview than revising a résumé after an interview. I always tell my clients to stay active in the job search until they get an offer in writing that they are willing to accept. Focus on what's next.
