There are things, data, outside and inside what “data” is. EXPLAIN what this data is…if it’s something with education, use a student example, use a testing example, use a behavior example (data). Use real world examples. I show my students a pie chart with 2 shades of the pie charted out. I ask them what this means. They say one side is bigger than the other. That’s great! What does each side mean? Is it dogs? Is it an electric car vs gasoline car? Is it consumption of people in one state vs a different state? When I read this stuff I just see data, items, logical places, blah blah blah. Unfortunately I have aphasia based on a stroke. But I can totally understand the items but what I need, and I’m sure other people, are real items.

Spectrum of Relationships: The tool should allow for one-one, one-many, many-many relationships between datasets. Excel does not allow many-many relationships, Power BI does. Hence PBI>Excel 2. Graphical Interface: As humans, we think best when we can visualize concepts. The data tool should allow us to see how tables flow into each other graphically. 3. Support for Wide Variety of Sources: The tool should not restrict data sources to only SQL databases or .csv/excel files. Today data comes from myriad places. A good data modelling tool should welcome data from hundreds of sources.

Data = items in the real world (cats, medicine, cars, behavior, students capacity for X) Source = where any of your data came from, it’s place in your world, it’s place in the rest of the world, the environment, money involved. Compatibility = how do cars compare with other cars, how is the environment based in this area compared with the environment in another area, how is money involved compared to another money and what does it buy? All four of these when packaged altogether, can make the choice more appropriate.
