What should you do before your first career counseling session?

Sit down and determine what types of jobs you're wanting to apply to as well as what types of companies. Do research on company culture and determine which are your top 10 companies. Be sure to have an updated copy of your resume and your LinkedIn profile ready. Often writing out lists of what you want and don't want is helpful in preparing for your 1st meeting with a career coach.

One thing I've found to be helpful, is to have the person you are meeting with, give you details on what they are hoping to get from the conversation. Then, you should prepare what the client/student is asking for. This way you have already prepared for what the person is looking for, also you have the opportunity to explore other possibilities with the remaining time.

There are two types of issues most of my clients present: 1. I need help getting started. These clients might be overwhelmed with options or can't seem to take the first step. They need a clear path on what steps to take to gain momentum. 2. I've started and I'm stuck. These clients may have a resume and need an outside perspective. Or maybe need help identifying their strategy for LinkedIn. Or maybe they get interviews and can't seem to land the role. Knowing what's been done can help your career coach identify the right place to start.

One thing I have found to be useful before doing career counseling is to do a self assessment, which will help you to analyse if it's a passion or a phase you are going through why you want a particular job. In doing this you will be better able to match your traits with the prerequisites of the career field, for example if it's the hospitality industry you want to be apart of then you should posses traits like been kind, friendly or hospitable just to name a few.

In my experience, doing your research is crucial to understanding what truly suits you and what doesn't. You can use the simplest of the techniques, which is to google it!: - You can search for specific skills and see what types of jobs come up if you know you want to use a certain skill set; - You can search for roles in a specific industry; or - You can even search for a specific role title and see which industries suit you best. The above is a very simple way to go about it, but it can be hugely time-consuming, as the amount of information is endless! To make the most out of it, I would encourage you to define specific research goals and document key findings against them so that you know when you got what you were looking for.

Hoje, temos muitas fontes e às vezes fica difícil priorizar. Uma dica que sempre dou é para mapear pessoas que tem uma trajetória de carreira que você admira e tentar conversar com elas. Você pode mandar mensagem para as pessoas no linkedin ou pedir para amigos lhr apresentarem a essas pessoas que conhe?am esses profissionais. Assim, você pode pedir dicas profissionais diretamente para eles e eles podem te ajudar a compreender suas opc?es e priorizá-las adequadamente.

O mais importante é você "estar presente" e realmente se comprometer a fazer o que for planejado. A maioria simplesmente elabora um plano de a??o que n?o vai sair do papel. Planejar é antes de mais nada ter atitude, saber que precisa executar.

You have to be aware of the client's aim - maybe the person lacks some information about career development or education opportunities, maybe he/she needs some help with composition of the cover letter. Of course, documents of application are important.

Uma dica que também costumo dar é pedir para a pessoa fazer uma linha de vida separada por anos ou blocos de anos e colocar principais marcos ao longo dos anos. N?o apenas profissionais, mas educacionais e outras experiências (como viagens, cursos especificos, momentos marcantes como maternidade). Assim, você consegue extrair principais pontos importantes, aprendizados ao longo dos anos e conseguir entender mais profundamente seu storytelling (a história da sua vida. Assim, fica bem mais fácil para elaborar um CV, linkedin e se preparar para entrevistas.

It pays to consider whether your personal and professional values are regularly not being exhibited by professionals and companies already in the field. If you join them prepare for an internal struggle against the status quo and a dilution of your own values and beliefs and this will be reflected in incongruent actions in the work place on your part.

Uma outra dica é pensar: - quem s?o as pessoas que você mais admira? Por que? - quem s?o seus anti heróis? Por que? Quando você olha as coisas que admira e desgosta, você descobre seus próprios valores. Outra dica é você lembrar momentos críticos e de crise. Como vocé tomou as decis?es? O que levou em considera?ao? Provavelmente, você também descobrirá valores que s?o importantes para você. Por fim, fale com seus amigos e familiares. Pe?a ajuda, pergunte a eles que características te descreveriam e porque. Também vai descobrir novas coisas sobre você.

Eu sempre sugiro que as pessoas compartilhem da maneira mais honesta e profunda possível. Por que você precisa de ajuda? S?o realmente quest?es de carreira? Se sim, é sobre o trabalho atual? é sobre perspectivas futuras? é preciso pensar quais s?o seus pontos de dor para que, a partir disso, seu(a) mentor(a) possa te ajudar a desenhar o plano de mentoria.

Fa?a perguntas para si primeiro: onde preciso de ajuda? Quais s?o os meus maiores desconfortos atualmente?. é importante formular perguntas claras e diretas para que o conselheiro possa fornecer respostas precisas e adequadas.

When I schedule a first session with a client my main recommendation is “bring your questions and expectations. Write it down if necessary.” Answering those main questions helps the client assess my experience and methodology, and eventually decide to buy my services.

It is okay for you to desire a career counseling session in the midst of confusion. You don't need to have your career options figured out. That is what counseling is for: to help you 'arrange' your thoughts and make good decisions. Don't be afraid to seek career counseling if you think you need it.
