As far as I remember, encryption was first introduced to Bluetooth at version 5.0. Therefore versions 4.x and below use cleartext transmisson, which means they're all vulnerable to any sort of attack. Since these technologies are backward compatible, a Bluetooth 5.x device would work with any other Bluetooth y.x device too. This means that you'll be at the safe side only if both devices use Bluetooth 5.0 upwards. If one of the devices has a lower version, all the communication would be cleartext.

Let's take a scenario: Rahul and Jackson are best friends and they are talking with each other over the internet. Let's say there is a third person called Mike who is watching what Rahul and Jackson are talking about, they will be sharing and talking about something important. This Mike doesn't do anything except watch what they are talking and waits for something finding valuable information. This is MITM Attack, someone on the internet might be watching our communication taking place if we don't utilize encryption which will protect from information be easily visible to someone else and hard to detect. This is a privacy risk. Bluetooth pairing is important and pair with only trusted one's. Hope it helps!

The range of Bluetooth devices are not very long, typically around 10-100 meters and this figure drastically comes down if there's a wall between. So be careful about the devices in your room, adjacent room or the building and the floor across the street. Keep bluetooth off when you're not using it and make sure you connect to YOUR device. If you're on the go, pay attention to the vehicles which drive with the same speed and direction with you for more than a few minutes.
