1 Types of systems

The main difference lies with principle: either it is a de-icing (removes ice after formation) or an ant-icing (prevents ice from formation) The choice of anti-icing system depends on the platform and application. Typically, general aviation aircraft have de-icing boots on the wings and propeller, while gas turbine aircraft have a thermal system. The de-icing boots have a higher component count, complexity, and weight; these factors are compelling for new systems such as electric-thermal and electric-impulsive. In fact, modern airliners like the B-787 have an electric-thermal system to utilize the larger electric generator, which is energy efficient and also suitable for composite wing construction.

The function steps can vary depending on the choice of the system, but all systems offers autonomous and manual operation. In AUTO mode, the ice-detection sensor is used to detect the icing conditions. The sensor is placed in an area where the formation of ice is comparatively accelerated. For de-icing systems, the operating element has cyclic operation as a small amount of ice is allowed to form (cyclic operation makes de-icing systems energy efficient) and the operating frequency is proportional to the rate of icing. In the manual mode, the operator can turn on and off the system and set the operating speed (just like wind-shield wiper). On-ground operation is prevented as operating elements may get damaged.

De icing fluid is very very slippery. On the ramp can lead to numerous hazards. Not only to personal but also machinery great care has to be taken when walking around an aircraft that has been de iced .
