1 Suspension functions

Suspension is the system that connects the wheels to the chassis of the vehicle, allowing relative motion between them. It is designed to support the weight of the vehicle and its passengers, evenly distributing it among the wheels. 2 Suspension components

Suspension is composed of several components that work together to fulfill its functions. Springs, for instance, store and release energy when compressed or extended, and support the vehicle weight. Dampers, also known as shock absorbers, dissipate the energy stored in the springs, and keep excessive oscillations and bouncing at bay. Anti-roll bars, or sway bars, connect the left and right sides of the suspension to minimize body roll when cornering. Bushings are rubber or plastic elements that cushion the joints and connections of the suspension, while control arms, or wishbones or A-arms, link the wheels to the chassis and enable vertical and horizontal movement. Lastly, steering linkage transfers the steering input from the steering wheel to the wheels for direction changes.

3 Suspension types

There are various types of suspension systems, ranging from rigid axle suspension to active suspension. Rigid axle suspension is a solid beam or axle connecting the wheels on the same axle, providing high durability and load capacity, but low comfort and handling. Independent suspension allows each wheel to move independently, offering better comfort and handling but lower durability and load capacity. Semi-independent suspension is a compromise between the two, allowing some degree of relative motion between the wheels on the same axle.
