1 Clock signals basics

Clock signals are essentially square waves that switch between two voltage levels, usually 0 and 1, at a fixed frequency. The frequency determines how fast the clock signal changes, and it is measured in hertz (Hz). The time between two consecutive changes is called the clock period, and it is the inverse of the frequency. The ratio between the time that the signal is high (1) and the time that it is low (0) is called the duty cycle, and it is usually 50%. Clock signals are used to trigger the logic gates in digital circuits, so that they can perform their operations at the same time.

what is a clock signal? simply said, a clock signal to a digital circuit is a heartbeat to a human. it is a continuous square wave that oscillate between high state and low state with a fixed speed "frequency". its main purpose to synchronize the operations of a digital system and follows in time to coordinate its sequence of actions. it is a crucial component.

2 Clock signal generation

The building blocks of all clock generators are an oscillator and a shaping comparator with hysteresis. The output waveform of the oscillator is usually not square. Most of the time the shape is similar to a sine wave. The task of the shaping comparator is to convert the general waveform into the square wave.
