It is true that the hours can be long. Rough seas and inclement weather add to the misery of what may turn out to be a 20 hour shift. If you find an opportunity at a company that has equal time on and off, say 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off, you have plenty of time to recover. Essentially, you work six months of the year for a six figure income. Keep in mind, some 3 week hitches are smooth sailing with little to no problems. If you have the physical and mental fortitude to handle this type of work, go for it.

I disagree with the sentiment that working offshore may limit your chances for success in shore side jobs. Many Engineers leave the ship for shoreline jobs as Facilities engineers, Production Managers, Port Engineers, Government Jobs, Power Plants, etc....Many Many Marine Engineers have become successful shore side because of their offshore experience. Keep in mind, Marine Engineers and Merchant Mariners in general have superior training to most occupations. Training to include crisis management, damage control, medical training, fire fighting training, resource management just to name a few. This training is continued throughout a mariners career. Look up the CFR's or ask a mariner. A mariner can walk you through it.
