What are the pros and cons of using online platforms vs. software applications for mood boards?

Online platforms like Miro and Pinterest are great for their flexibility and accessibility, making collaboration easy. Yes, they can be unreliable and your client might not understand how to use them properly. Despite this, their convenience for showing videos often makes them my preferred choice over a very static pdf moodboard.

Sharing them with clients and collaborators is a breeze compared to having to constantly export and email files. Real-time collaboration in some of these platforms is also a big plus.

I use Pinterest for online mood boards because it is easy, just search over Pinterest create a board, and add your items for the mood board. It's easy and you can share it with clients and colleagues for review and feedback. Secondly, For offline mode, I use PureRef mainly. But I also use Milanote sometimes for mood boards. Just download all your references over the internet, then, drag and drop all data in them and re-arrange that according to your preference. Although it's a much more powerful way to work and produce high-quality content, I find it very difficult to integrate software applications into my workflow for mood board proposals. With the tight deadlines most projects have, the mood board stage needs to be quick and practical, and I don't see this method being useful in daily routines. The online tools developed for this purpose are much more efficient and generally allow you to achieve the same results for your clients in less time. That is, unless you're presenting a very specific concept or something that can't be done with online tools.

You can fine-tune your boards to look exactly how you want, which is great for specific branding needs. These apps often integrate with design workflows, making it easier to switch between mood boards and actual project files. The downside? They can be more complex to use and usually require a paid subscription. But for detailed, polished boards, they're a solid choice!

Regarding price: fortunately, there are many legendary apps that are free. For example, Blender (which is used by many designers). As for collaboration between different apps: the key is the artists professionalism, who can find alternative ways and "trick" the program (in a good sense). For example, transferring an after effects project to davinci resolve, or moving an unreal engine scene to unity.

When picking the best tool for mood boards, think about how you work. If you like quick sharing and team feedback, online platforms are awesome. They’re simple and great for collaboration. But if you want more control and don’t mind spending time learning a tool, software apps might be your jam—they offer more creative options. Also, don’t forget to factor in cost and how easy they are to use. Some tools are free but limited, while others offer more features for a price.

In my opinion, if you're starting in the creative field, the best way to discover your ideal workflow is by testing different methods. Practice is the only way to find a faster and more efficient way to work. As I mentioned before, I now prefer using online platforms to support this phase of my work. In my previous response, I mentioned and will now expand on the point that its beneficial to master multiple tools. I primarily work on 3D rendering, but motion design and graphic design apps are my everyday companions. What I mean is that when I want to execute a project in 3D, I absolutely need all the other programs to achieve the desired result. In other words, the more programs we know, the richer we become!
