What are the pros and cons of using AI to generate or edit writing?

You’ll never get original creative copy with a unique voice if you use AI. If it has anything to offer writers at all, it’s as a generator of generic business writing such as letters, or as a starting point for ideas and research. Even research isn’t always accurate, so it needs verifying. If you need to save time and money and you want to write yourself, work with a copywriter to get a good copy/content strategy, a tone of voice guide, and some storytelling skills instead.

I teach academic writing at a university. My students are international and working in a second language. It's wonderful as a research assistant, but a terrible choice to use to write papers themselves. We are doing a lot of coaching its use and also trying to convince them that letting it write their papers steals their chance to improve their critical thinking and argumentation skills. In many ways, I miss the old days (which came to an abrupt halt at the start of spring semester 2023), but I also see some promise in research help, especially for those from a second language.

I think that what we most underestimate when using AI to create or edit our text is the human part of it. We are humans talking to humans, and we have feelings, and AI can not compete with this for now.

How AI can best serve our writing goals? With this question in mind, I believe AI will boost, enhance, save time, and a lot more. It's a tool after all that we get to choose to use or not but don't expect it will be innovative, original, or creative.

AI has some extremely helpful features such as the ability to summarise large quantities of data quickly. Al can help writers to overcome the ‘blank page syndrome’ by providing an outline structure to follow.

Human formation may be short-circuited by relying too heavily on AI tools as a substitute for the important work of skill development and the complex realities involved in becoming a skilled writer and taking some level of talent and developing it. Input from other humans in all stages of the writing process is invaluable and a large language model bot, while extremely useful, does not have its own base of lived experiences nor intuition or relationships, and will not live up to the creative potential activated in human conversations that help lead to excellence in writing.

The use of AI tools, especially in education, is problematic. Students relying on AI are more likely to misunderstand topics, write inaccurately or even produce work on topics about which they have little to no knowledge.

Ah!! Man!! Where do I start. a) Lots of mis information. AI can write elaborately about something that's not even existing. b) Repetitive words usage. c) Using the same phrase/ simile again and again. I am fed-up with Chat GPT using "cosmic dance" every now and then

There’s still a danger that the results you get from AI tools are inaccurate or copied from others work. This means using the tool judiciously to speed up the writing process before you edit and validate the results. Don’t rely on it to produce a finished draft without your input.

This piece fails to differentiate between writing as in copy writing, writing as in composition and writing as in creative writing. AI is a higher order of spellcheck. All writers know how helpful that can be. Some forms of writing are valuable because of their predictable format, such as journalism. This extends to some forms considered artistic, as with the old "Silhouette Romance". These types of pieces are boring to write (although often remunerative) and would be easily produced by AI, as they reduce writing to a chore and formula. But other forms of writing are important because they originate in unique experience and non-standard usage. Unless this distinction is acknowledged, the question of AI in writing is a muddle.

As a content editor, I now have to work extra to check for plagiarism and AI usage in the submissions of my writers' team. They have been using AI tools lately for all their projects, which made me ask them to use some human creativity and research skills in the works they submit because we humans ultimately need that human touch in everything. These automated machines have limitations (which might change in future, though). Still, I believe imagination and creativity have the highest potential to impact and influence, and our audience is always human beings, not robots or AI.

AI will continue to replace mundane copy like marketing, most technical, educational and perhaps biographies and autobiographies. Fiction is going to be interesting. Pattern and logic are the key to logarithmic programs like Chat GPT. I think in fictional works and poetic works that AI influence will be easier to detect.

You can use AI as a translation tool between languages you are competent in, with quite a good outcome if you have a pretty good original text. Of course, its success depends on the languages used, as its proficiency can vary from language to language. You will likely need to edit to add synonyms and improve the wording, but a well-worded prompt will significantly reduce such need!
