Speaking from personal experience, fixed-term contracts offer both opportunities and challenges for lecturers. Looking back at my 4+ years teaching at CSUSB, I found such contracts brought uncertainty, impacting job security and long-term planning. However, they also allowed me to teach subjects I am passionate about, enjoy high enrollment, and receive positive evaluations. Ideally, balancing these factors is key to maximizing the benefits while mitigating the drawbacks. Yet, often, lecturers have limited control over this balance, facing 'take it or leave it' decisions that can make navigating these challenges even more complex.

From the perspective of lecturers, I don't see any benefits in having fixed-term contracts. These contracts bring a lot of uncertainty for educators, as they always have to look for the next job. This worry can really distract them from focusing on their main tasks, like teaching and doing research. Educators who do a good job should have fair work conditions, which means having a job that's secure in the long term. Frequent use of fixed-term contracts could lead to losing talented educators, negatively impacting the education field. It's crucial to reconsider these contracts to ensure a stable and supportive environment for educators.
