Bootstrapping has an obvious advantage of retaining ownership of your company. A less-discussed benefit is that financial constraints can serve as a catalyst for frugality and rapid revenue growth. Having investment money in the bank can create a false sense of security.

I always recommend that founder(s) bootstrap or not use anyone else’s money till absolutely necessary. 1) Most investors like to see that you have “skin in the game” and your initial placement in the business is a legitimate investment. 2) Putting in sweat equity is also beneficial but there is a difference between adding capital (money) and doing work to build the business (sweat equity). 3) Building slowly so you prove earnings is highly valued by investors whether from a friends and family network, accredited investors or venture capital.

The main purpose of raising capital is to provide startups with the firepower needed to accelerate their growth. Without external capital (bootstrapping), limited resources can constrain a startup's growth, leading to slow market penetration and giving an advantage to better-capitalised competitors.

The biggest here is limited access to capital and in some cases mentorship from investors. This can cause a lag in reaching critical mass and might mean that you run out of runway before the business takes off. It might also mean a delay in entering newer markets which typically take a lot of capital.

Depends a lot on the investors but you could loose control of the overall development and direction of the company. Another issue is that these investors want very high returns from their investment which means they will want the business to hyperscale as soon as possible. This can induce a lot of stress on an unproven team and sometimes an unproven product.
