What programming languages do you want to learn?

Rust. Not because I think it's the best, but because of the direction it suggests. We've probably moved beyond the peak of pure client-side static web SPA apps running as interpreted JavaScript. Rust, WebAssembly, and frameworks such as Yew and Rocket, suggest a new focus on performance and stability that is not typically associated with JavaScript apps (that includes TypeScript, which layers in a useful type system, but is ultimately transpiled to runtime JavaScript). I acknowledge this is speculative, but I'm seeing a great deal of interest in moving web apps to a hybrid server model (with more being pushed to the server), to augment performance and security. If you track Rust, you'll track this paradigm. I've got my eye on it.

I would love to keep learning Rust. It is a language that pushes you towards correctness and completeness. The fact that it's not an OOP language that can nonetheless pretty much be used like one, but with the many advantages from functional programming makes this language a pleasure to work with. Rust is a productive language in which you make progress fast, and with which you make fast programs. Its native support for WebAssembly makes it a tool that can be used for pretty much anything, from embedded to web and everything in between. Rust is definitely one of the best programming languages out there. If you have any piece of code that you'd like that it would run faster and safer, rewrite it in Rust.

Even though my goals are not aligned with this, I still want to continue going deep dive into C# and its giant ".NET" platform.

If your goal is to start learning, lua is one of the easiest languages to pick up. Where others might have 3-5 different ways of doing the same thing, lua typically has 1. Sometimes 2. It frees you up to focus on learning design and concepts rather than syntax, and you can build a strong foundation that translates to most other languages. It's usually embedded as a modding language, so you can learn in the confines of a video game. Or do whatever you want in a dozen open source game frameworks.

Java and c# for maturity and stability, while python is good for beginners and looking for simplicity. Programming languages has a pros and cons, it's still boils down on how you write your code in terms of readable, manageable and simplicity and security practices in place and solving the write problems.

You will eventually find your way, just try everything. This is a vast field of study and there are many paths you can follow. I started wanting to work in the back end, but a friend introduced me to web development and I fell in love almost immediately. One thing will lead you to another and when you notice you will be already walking your own path. Try everything, practice, play, be curious and, if you fail, try again.

Agree to Alejandro-heredia-coronel's post and would like to add the following: - there is a difference between academically learning a language (which allows exploring the language at one's leisure with limited constraints) and - learning the "shop" language - as used within a Company and/or project, where additional to the academic language, there are many constraints: shared library usage, global template, collaborating with the rest of the team (including adapting to coding best practice in effect within the team). If CI/CD or static code analysis is a gate, rules should be known. I think that the two stages should be followed i.e. Bringing a developer with limited (or no) language skills into a project is... irresponsible.

Consider your personal preferences when selecting a programming language. Each language has its syntax, readability, and community norms. If simplicity is your preference, Python may be appealing. If you enjoy flexibility, JavaScript could be a suitable choice. I like to learn a wide range of languages from low levels to high levels. That's why I choose Go and Rust which covers both low and mid levels and even high level.

I should mention the ease and fun of immersing myself in Go. From the first steps, I personally enjoyed learning this language with its powerful ecosystem of tools. On the other hand, for rapid prototyping and testing some ideas, Python was the best choice for me. It allowed me to utilize the power of its vast ecosystem of modules to build a witty web application in no time at all

Learning a new language or technology is not just about the immediate skill acquired but about building a mindset. By continually challenging myself with new technologies, I've cultivated a growth mindset, which helps me adapt quickly to the ever-changing tech landscape. The adaptability has been a valuable asset in my career, more so than any specific language or tool I've learned.

Research the demand for languages in the job market. Analyze job postings in your field of interest to identify the languages in high demand. Learning languages with significant job market relevance enhances your employability and opens up diverse career opportunities. Balance this with your passion and interests to find the intersection that aligns with both market demand and personal fulfillment.

I personally like to learn something related to Blockchain, which I think Go and Rust are the best candidates for me, and Of course Solidity.

After studying some surveys, I realized that for career opportunities, the choice of tool is not that important. I even met vacancies with Delphi and Cobol as the main language. At the same time, I noticed that Java, JS, and Python traditionally have the most job openings, while Go and Rust seem to be more trending.

I would discourage anyone from learning a new language or any technology in general, just because it provides career opportunities. Cobol programmers are needed right now. That wouldn't push me to learn it, unless I'm interested in the language despite it's popularity or market demands.

C++ does not require a generous budget or powerful computer, or even an IDE. Purely from a resources perspective, this should not be an issue when learning a new language.

I have to disagree with the idea that learning C++ requires a hefty budget and a top-of-the-line computer. When I started coding in C++, I used a fairly basic laptop and free software even it available in some Linux distro by default . You can download free compilers and IDEs that run smoothly on less powerful systems. Also, C++ isn't just for those with extravagant resources; it teaches you core programming concepts like object-oriented programming that are universally valuable. So, in my experience, diving into C++ doesn't demand a premium setup.

While the so-called "learning curve" is a thing to consider, I personally believe that a lot depends on one's goals. For example, I only spent two weeks of evenings learning Python and Flask from scratch to prototype an application, but I realize that this is clearly not enough for production-level coding. If I were to create such an application in Golang or Java, it would definitely take much longer.

We as humans have only one really valuable resource. It's free time. If there is no free time at hands, it's better to reconsider how one spends it. There is no hard or easy technology, there is lack or abundance of interest.

Considering availability, Python's open-source nature and vast learning materials align with my learning style. While intrigued by languages like C++, I recognize the investment required, both in terms of time and tools. Don’t worry about how wast the programming language is. In today’s time, you won’t be staying only in one programming language. Just focus on small steps at once. Once you reach cross platforms, diversity flexibility stage, you will find your way to sail your boat.

Popularity or specialization of a language is a factor for business to consider. But one can try to use hammer for everything, just to check how hard it is to use tools not fitting the task. If it's done during learning, we can save time on production tasks.

I totally agree that being open to different paradigms helps. Learning a new programming language that uses the same paradigm you already know is relatively simple. On the other hand, learning a new paradigm takes time but gives more advantages. I would recommend investing some time in it. For example having a little experience with functional programming gave me a better understanding when the state is desirable and when it must be avoided. As a result, my code became cleaner.

Having fun it's the most important thing in programming, if you don't enjoy what you do, then, what's the point? Some languages depending on your perspective will be more entertaining than others.

I agree with this point. Learning consistently is hard, so if one is able to have fun while learning, that will be a strong motivator to continue. When I start learning a new programming language, I search for the best opensource repos and always try to find lots of fun programs written in that language. This helps me to learn it easier and better.

Unless you want to do something huge, any basic computer will be able to run any tool set for it. A text editor, a compiler (if needed) and a browser is more than enough for 95% of the languages. If you want to go for gaming, you may need something extra, but it's the exception

Don’t fall on the trap of “learn coding in 5 hours or 5day” kind of courses. Give it time, learn how to code and not a programming language.

Sometimes, the best option is to make a new programming/scripting language that fits your needs or the needs of the project.

Before thinking about programming or choosing a programming language it is of utmost importance to learn and think about algorithms. When we have this covered we can then apply it to any programming language. Learning to program is much more than writing code, it involves learning to think about how you are going to do things and the steps you are going to take to solve the problem.
