1 Define your story

Exec notes are incorporated into cleaned up storyboard 5. Deadline is met, back to number 1 for the next episode This is how it SHOULD go. It almost never actually goes that smoothly because of unusual script demands, work interruptions, holidays, artist missing a deadline, lack of resources, editorial changes mid-stream, and more. Each episode is its own animal. The remedy is always, always, always EXPERIENCE. Conquering these issues in your past is what gives you the knowledge to continue conquering them in the future. AI cannot replace it.

The best storyboards are tied to the message but also have to incorporate what and how the end animation will be used. A script is generally the best place to start. What are you saying or what do you want to say? What is the message/story? Then you develop the storyboard. What are the scenes? Set the tone. Don't forget the details (i.e. logo intros/outros). Factor in animation throughout and transitions between scenes. Stay within the allotted time based on the media being used and the amount of time allowed by the platform. It is your job to entertain and be interesting. Too many people run too long, don't entertain and loose the audience. Remember the message you want the viewer to walk away with and stay on task to convey it clearly.

2 Sketch your thumbnails

The next step is to sketch your thumbnails, or the rough drawings of each scene or shot of your storyboard. Thumbnails are usually small and simple, and they focus on the composition, framing, and perspective of each shot. You can use paper and pencil, or a digital drawing software, to create your thumbnails. You can also use storyboard templates or grids to organize your thumbnails in a sequential order. The number and size of your thumbnails may vary depending on the length and complexity of your animation.

3 Add details and annotations

The third step is to add details and annotations to your thumbnails, to make them more clear and informative. Details are the elements that enhance the visual quality and style of your storyboard, such as colors, backgrounds, expressions, and movements. Annotations are the notes that explain the technical aspects and instructions of your storyboard, such as camera angles, zooms, pans, cuts, transitions, sound effects, and dialogues. You can use different symbols, codes, or labels to indicate your annotations, and make sure they are consistent and legible.

4 Review and revise your storyboard

The final step is to review and revise your storyboard, to check if it meets your objectives and expectations. You need to evaluate your storyboard from different perspectives, such as the story, the characters, the visuals, and the audio. You can also ask for feedback from other people, such as your peers, clients, or audience, to get different opinions and suggestions. You can use different tools and methods to review your storyboard, such as animatics, story reels, or mock-ups. Here's the process. Hire an experienced board team with supervisor and coordinator. Dont expect your supe to coordinate, they have enough to do as it is. Explain in detail the tone, intent and other expectations including scheduled time. Give them a script breakdown and all other necessary resources, designs, bgs, NatPause etc and when a rough pass is done give your notes for revisions. The artist will execute these, hand off to the editor. The artist/ board artist or revisionist, will execute on whatever animatic revisions are given and after that any additional revisions from client or other entity and then the animatic is locked and Bob's your uncle, Fannie's your aunt, Bing-bong-boom you have a completed storyboard.
