Always refer to documentation when inquiring about network infrastructure. It's always a good rule of thumb to scope out configurations, assets, network policies, and understand what is used, and most importantly the answer to why it's being used that specific way/configuration. Always be transparent when conducting upgrades/and or changes to the I.T. Environment and update documentation whenever possible if it's outdated. Always keep up to date with the latest changes or software releases for the I.T. infrastructure and be ready to rollback if things don't go as planned and keep contingency plans and Standard Operating Procedures handy.

In addition, it's always important to keep changes and goals/milestones documentation along with status of the projects/deployments. Keep detailed notes on project deployments and ensure that everything is working and any issues are worked out before handing off deliverables to the client.

Once the IT vision and goals are established, the IT strategy consultant develops the IT roadmap and plan that outlines the steps, resources, timelines, and milestones to achieve them. A consultant should definitely review all existing infrastructure technologies before any important I.T. Project Proposals are made/suggested. Always keep up-to-date with latest hardware/software releases and changes. Keeping documentation centrally located and organized based on infrastructure type is key to having a successful project deployment completion. It's always important to keep the client informed any and all of changes to the I.T. Infrastructure.

A Golden rule of thumb is always address the customers needs/concerns of the project - it's important to keep the client up to date as much as possible with any issues that might impact their environment regardless of whether its positive or negative. A client needs transparency and updates and that is one of the main responsibilities of a consultant - to provide feedback of existing infrastructure and address the "how do we make it better" question. Keep all stakeholders involved because it is critical to the success of any I.T. Projects.

It's important to review existing I.T. Policies, review your ticketing system and understand your metrics that you maintain with the client. It's important to do a review, and document SLA deadlines, tickets, etc. Always document and generate SLA reports to show performance metrics, and review issues that are problematic and address those based on priority levels. It's always a good idea to setup priority levels on your I.T. relates issues.
