What are the pitfalls to avoid when writing dialogue for children in fiction?

I have found that my stories receive the best responses from children when the story is fun and the lesson is hidden. It is important to have a lesson in the stories to develop character but it is more important to keep the child engaged and interested.

When the character is a child ,we should make the reader visualise a child while reading about him/her. We should write a child character who can be found next door. The readers will definitely find similarity between the character and a child that they know. We should stay true to the child character.

We have the advantage of having gone through the stage ,hence we will be in a better position to write about the emotions of a child . Spending time with children and observing their behaviour pattern shall certainly help us develop a child character even better. If we can aptly articulate their gestures ,their reactions ,the character shall certainly come alive.

And while trying to write a emotional piece for them it is definitely a herculean task. However, this can be achieved by maintaining a balanced approach while writing. Don't go overboard nor underestimate the emotional quotient. Just stay simple.

Children's emotions can be intense, however, it may be a good idea for a writer to test it to an audience. It is sometimes necessary for those who read to children to stop and ask "what do you think it's going to happen", and let them kind of anticipate or predict the ending. Let them feel part of the story.

If we are writing about two children of different age groups then we must be cautious of it,for a four year old and a nine year old speak differently.Their reaction to things ,their aspirations et al will also be different. We must take this into consideration, both while talking about different child characters and while narrating the journey of the same child over the years.

Keep the audience in mind. Children like to read about other children who are older than them. So you have to balance the authenticity of the dialogue of the characters in the story and keep in mind that the reader may be younger than the characters. So for middle-grade novels, the main character may be 11yo, but the reader may be 8yo.

No two children are the same. However, children share similar experiences and perceptions of the world based on their bodies and brain's capacity to grow and absorb the world around them. Authors of fiction should know their audience and take into consideration the age as well as the developmental stage the intended reader is experiencing. The five-year-old reader who easily identifies sight words finds fun in reciting them and feeling like they contributed to storytime. The three-year-old smiles when they realize the correlation between the color red in the illustration and the stop sign on the street. Make the page appealing to the sensory nature of the child in their stage to ensure being picked off the shelf over and over.

While writing children fiction, one of the major concern is to understand appropriate age group. A 6 year old and a 14 year old, both are children. An author should clearly have an idea regarding the focused age group and write dialogues accordingly and age appropriately. This makes an author more close to the target readers and the characters and story will resonate more.

From my recent experience, most children call each other "friend"... not by a color, gender, nor unique trait. Just friend. Don't single any one out, that's not what friends do

We may assume that a child will speak or act in a particular way or pattern. However while writing children fiction we should avoid stereotyping characters based on that assumption. Bring in more diversity and possibility to tingle curiosity in young readers. Never underestimate their intelligence.

Make sure to differentiate. Show visible difference. If it's a bad character show them bad through words, tone, and expression. A hero-like character will sound and act like a hero. They are not supposed to use bad words. If they use bad words, then children will consider it okay and adopt it. The way you write, will shape the imagination of children.

Try not to paint too rosy a world. Strike a balance between realism and fantasy. Use examples from day to day life. Kindle the children’s imagination in such a way that they become book lovers eventually, not as a means of escape but to face their fears and become strong human beings.

Don't preach to kids. They read for entertainment just like adults do. They want to be immersed in a story and love the characters. They don't want to be taught a lesson or be preached to. Just because they're children, doesn't mean that the stories are easier to write. You need to appeal to the audience, not to yourself.
