What is the optimal length for a landing page?

Nailing your messaging on your landing page is key, but there’s different ways to go about this. In the past, I’ve found 2 kinds of landing pages to be very effective. A) Very little information, lots of visuals — develop curiosity, create fomo and build exclusivity. B) The complete picture — make sure your landing page visitors have answers to every possible question they might have. On the other hand, one must also keep in mind that the landing page needs to cater to the kind of audience, which part of the funnel they’re part of, etc. In conclusion, there’s rule of thumb when it comes to the length of a landing page. Explore multiple options, what works for another business might not work for you. See what works and work on that!

The essence of a landing page is determined by its use. No matter what it is used for or the aim. If it is to drive traffic or sales. The aim of a Landing page is to sell either directly or indirectly.

Having worked as a content creator for 8 years, I have a few best practices to keep in mind with respect to the length of the Landing Page. - The length should not be more than 3 scrolls, with at least 3 CTAs. - If the struggle is between information v/s length of text, keep in mind that you can always use infographics. - Keep the text bare minimum. Use catchy but consistent images. - Tonality should be informative, avoid quirky or flowery sentences - Give different types of CTAs such as Know More, Request Callback, Request Demo.

The biggest myth about landing pages ?? ? "Make it shorter. The shorter the better" Hmmm, no. Sorry for all the companies and web designers out there who hate long copy. But actually, both can convert well. Short AND long copy. Here are the 3 main factors that you need to consider ?? #1 Level of complexity: how complex is the product or service you are selling? #2 Level of engagement: are you asking for an email? Or 5000 $? #3 Level of awareness: how aware is the buyer about your product or service? Where are they at in their buyer's journey?

A very important factor here is the nature of the business: B2B or B2C. You should also consider the newness of your offer to your audience. If you're offering somethign that is in a mature industry (eg pilates classes), you may not need to include as much supportive literature as say promoting a new software that measures and calibrates your industrial machinery.

Think of it like finding the sweet spot – enough info to hook, not too much to lose interest. Now you just need to close the deal. Inform them what to do and what they need to fill in.

Use symbols rather than long-copy to illustrate a point. Also make sure that the landing page is optimised for viewing on a mobile phone.

I think with the advanced age Google and search engine crawlers rank your page with low content as well - as long you are able to solve people's problem quickly and efficiently. If you can communicate the idea within 600 words that's enough - no need to add fluff and make the page exceed 2000 words for the same topic. Bottom Line: be helpful, valuable, and useful. Google will reward you!

Typically speaking, most parent pages are between 500-750 words while child pages are 350-500. However saying that, it really depends on the overall structure of the website, industry/main objectives of the site, and who you’re targeting. You’ll need to take several factors into account when planning your website but the above should work as a general rule of thumb.

I believe you will find that readership studies confirm that the audience will read long copy when the product or service is complex and the reader has a high level of interest. Potential buyers of a Learjet, for example, will not hesitate to read the rather lengthy details when considering a purchase.

Beyond this, you should also consider these other factors in a landing page: 1) The Attractiveness of the Offer. Are you giving away somethign for free, or offering a discount, or providing a sample product. This will determine how long the page should be. 2) The types of products or services offered. If you are in e-commerce and selling a product, you may need multiple photos and views of the product, perhaps a video to show how its used, as well as reviews.

Generally, if you are able to architect, design and write your landing pages from the lens of solving a true customer need, want or problem... you will be able to effectively move your target audience through the funnel. This is true in any communication touchpoint, and as a result, this is absolutely something to consider on your landing page. Know where your audience is arriving from and ensure that the landing page feels like a continuation of the same story -- not an entirely new book. It should feel like a natural progression. If someone saw your marketing or advertising, they should almost be able to pre-call what information they will find on your landing page, or what questions will be answered. Can they?

There's no one one-size-fits-all for the length of landing pages, but in an increasingly online proliferated space, it's important to keep things as succinct as possible to accommodate to the short-attention space of the audience, but ensuring the comprehension and accuracy isn't compromised. On the other hand, if you're working with SEO, you need to ensure there's an effective collection of the right keywords to make sure the landing page or website is competitively positioned online. If you can find a sweet spot between the above two, it's the optimal fit. But always prioritise your objective and goals. Good luck!

Don't confuse brevity with shorty copy. A lot of time is wasted debating long vs short copy, especially for landing pages. The obvious answer is to test short and long versions of each page. But that is not what brief copy is. Long or short copy is a feeling more than it is a size. As Howard Gossage says, People don't read ads. People read what interests them and sometimes its an ad. The same goes for landing pages. Brief copy can be long or short. But what it never is is long-winded. Long copy can work great as long as you move quickly through it. You can do that by making one interesting or exciting statement follow the other. Just don't take forever to get to the point.

One thing my demand gen colleagues taught me is that the call to action does NOT have to be the last thing on a landing page. Occasionally I remember this lesson.
