To use the open systems model effectively, entrepreneurs can take four steps to scan the environment, define the system, design the system, and improve the system. Scanning involves assessing external factors such as customers, competitors, suppliers, regulations, and trends and anticipating their future developments. Defining the system involves specifying inputs, processes, outputs, and feedback and clarifying the vision, mission, and goals in relation to the environment. Designing the system entails creating a structure, culture, and processes to achieve goals and create value for stakeholders as well as choosing resources, technologies, methods, and tools to support activities and outputs. Finally, improving the system involves monitoring outputs and feedback against goals and expectations; identifying gaps and problems in the system; analyzing causes and effects; and implementing changes or improvements for efficiency, effectiveness, and sustainability.
