You need to be able to communicate fast and efficiently, you need to be a great multitasker, have awesome problem solving skills and be an overall "people person" And above all, you need to know how to recognize peoples talents, and how to utilize them.

In my experience, if you want to work as product designer, sites like upwork and fiver are a great way to start and also great way to get noticed. You will have the opportunity to work on variety of different products and will gain necessary experience so that in the future you have a versatile portfolio and lots of experience to be able to join some big companies and continue your career in that direction, or start your own company and work on your own products.

As research is the foundation that every product lays on. A product researcher is quite a very important role in product design. They’re also called UX researcher. UX writing is also worth exploring. After doing so much in research, organizing the results of the experiment is of importance.

The industry is valuing more and more the Designers that are able to understand the entire service and not just a screen or a specific product. Aside from any job title, a promising career path (in regard to design) requires curiosity, a firm understanding of functionality/purpose, and a rather absurd amount of interest in the problem-solution. Industries and opportunities come and go, but understanding and embracing the fact that the path you are on will be a continuous evolution of perception and application typically carves out the path for you. With that being said, learn as many different (and unrelated) disciplines that you can... they all eventually bleed over into each other.

The term product design has changed in recent years, whereas a few years ago it basically was what an industrial designer was before, now it has to some extent been highjacked by many software developers to mean the design of their products. Now, not saying there are no opportunities for a traditional product designer in designing user interfaces, but truthfully it is more a graphic design type of job.

The design industry is very dynamic, some job roles combine 2 or more of this roles as one depending on how big the company is and what they can afford to hire. So it's best to be a major in at least one and then be knowledgeable in others.
