What are the most important things to highlight in your resume when applying for a leadership role?

No resume needed. Words don’t matter as much as wins. Talk is cheap and so are resumes. Put your history on this platform - it works. Work to have proof that you win and people will know who you are. They will know what type of leader you are (nobody fits perfectly into any leadership style by the way). Be real, you are the only version of you. If a resume is requested, send a link to your profile and focus on continuing to win instead of telling people that you can win, if hired.

When coaching or debriefing someone, help them think about what makes them a great leader by asking about their achievements and the experiences that shaped them. Encourage them to share specific examples that show their leadership skills and how they've made a difference. Create a supportive environment where they feel comfortable talking about their goals and where they see themselves going. By helping them reflect on their journey and giving feedback, you can empower them to confidently express what makes them stand out as a leader.

When listing skills and qualifications on your resume for a leadership role, emphasize a mix of technical and soft skills. Showcase your proficiency in strategic planning, decision-making, and project management. Highlight communication and interpersonal skills, emphasizing your ability to lead and inspire teams. Your skills and qualifications should be evident by your outcomes/accomplishments, but you need to list your relevant certifications and degrees. I do think you want to stay away from a skill word vomit, but those same words if they can be used in outcome writing it would be useful.

In the "Awards and Recognition" section of your resume, highlight notable achievements that showcase your leadership impact. Include awards for team accomplishments, individual contributions, or specific projects. Mention any industry accolades, leadership honors, or recognition for innovation. Awards and recognition demonstrate that you have been recognised by others for your leadership achievements, and these become particularly important if these are from industry associations beyond your company, as these will carry more 'clout' again. But it is also worthy to include team or company awards if you had a significant involvement in the achievement, because these can also emphasise your leadership skills and how much of an impact your skills can have.

You should list your formal awards and recognition that you believe move the needle for what you are trying to convey. I do not agree that you should include informal recognition on the resume, but certainly you want to find a way organically to bring it up in the interview (there should be plenty of opportunity). There is always debate about how far back to go. I think that if it helps show a pattern, keep the older on with the new, but if what you have that is relevant is from 20 years ago, it may not convey what you hope.

Goals and aspirations are probably better suited being discussed live in an interview rather than explained on a resume. The resume should get you in the door to tell your story. Your story is your why, the resume is the outcomes and accomplishments - the proof of your why.

I have been a part of interview panel for a few CEO and CXO hiring and in my view ☆ a good alignment of personality and values is the key and most important for me when I am hiring for any leadership role. The other aspects like industry knowledge, work experience, relevant industry relationships, stakeholder management is all a given and would surely align. If the organisation principles and beliefs are aligned with the candidates personal values, only then it can be long term success for a leadership role. If organisation believes in ☆ Growth at any cost ~ but the personal values beleive in ☆ Ethics over profits ~ then it can never be a good long term fit.

To make sure you are in full alignment with your future company and role, transparency and openness about your core values is key. Be open about non-negotiables from the start to prevent later misunderstandings and discussions.

Researching a company, or role and tailoring your CV to ensure you maximise alignment is useful but for me it’s crucial to remain authentic too. It’s a good opportunity to ask yourself if your leadership values align to the company, ultimately misalignment will lead to friction at best.

One of the most impressive demonstrations of leadership is that in an effort without a clear command structure - in other words, volunteer efforts, by and large. If you’ve never spent any significant time leading in a volunteer capacity, it’s an incredible way to hone your leadership skills. Getting people to follow you as a leader, when they aren’t getting paid to do it, is a true test of your capabilities and potential. Highlight the fire out of any experiences like this.

Leadership is all about how you impacted people and what legacy you left behind. If you left the place and people better than how you got it, you are a successful leader and this is what you should try to show in your resume/value add.

It is really difficult to make leadership evaluations on paper. What really happens is that HR will cull and shortlist resumes based on the historical information provided. So stay factual, list down your historical achievements without being verbose. It is during the interview where the recruiter can make conclusions about your style and how you fit into the organization. Therefore, it is important to learn more about the culture of the organization you are applying to.

Make sure to include your accomplishments, not just your titles and job descriptions. Furthermore, drug approvals and revenue increases are great, but don't forget to highlight your interpersonal and team development skills. Your direct reports' accomplishments reflect as much on you as it does on them.

I recommend to mention the "IMPACT" you created in your past leadership roles. Focus on the transformation you lead. For example: - I helped/built/developed xyz in a specific time period - I transformed engagements/people/initiatives
