My advice to anyone applying for a role in a school community. 1. Research the school. Visit their social media. Review their website. Prepare questions that reference what you are curious about regarding their school. 2. Prepare your impact pitch. How have you moved student performance or positively impacted the lives of youth and/or staff members? Share the DNA aka Data with the hiring team. 3. Tailor your talking points to the role you have applied for. Share how you would imagine yourself serving in the role by connecting your prior experience to ways it can be valuable to the school community you are planning to join. 4. Have 1-2 good open-ended questions for the interviewer(s) about school climate, relationships, partnerships, etc

Look within your network for connections to someone already employed at the school. Use this as an opportunity to seek honest feedback on the environment, support provided to teachers, teacher union work, etc. OR seek them out yourself via the school's website or LinkedIN and ask for an informal meeting for advice/to hear more about their experience teaching

5 Ask insightful questions

At the end of the interview, you will have a chance to ask the principal some questions of your own. This is an opportunity to learn more about the school and the job, and also to show your curiosity and engagement. You should ask insightful questions that reflect your research, your values, and your goals. For example, you can ask about the school culture, the expectations for teachers, the professional development opportunities, or the student outcomes. You should avoid asking questions that are too personal, too trivial, or too negative.

Before you close your interview with the school principal, you should ask the principal if there are real opportunities for career advancement within the school. It’s good to be transparent and proactively state your career aspirations so that the principal is aware that you don’t plan on teaching in the classroom forever (if that’s the case for you). If you have aspirations of being an instructional coach, state that. If you have aspirations of becoming a school administrator, state that. By openly sharing these aspirations, you’re taking the first step towards setting your purpose, as well as demonstrating your ambition and investment in your professional growth.

6 Follow up afterward

The last thing to do after the interview is to follow up with the principal and thank them for their time and consideration. You can send a thank-you note or email within 24 hours of the interview, and restate your interest and enthusiasm for the job. You can also mention something specific that you discussed or learned during the interview, and highlight your qualifications and skills. You should keep your message brief, polite, and professional, and avoid being pushy or desperate.

You're not just interviewing you are assessing is this school/organization a good fit for you! Make an honest list with what you'll need in a employer (pay, culture, benefits, etc.) and measure the schools you apply to against that!
