What are the most important things to do before a market research job interview?

Before entering my first market research role, I conducted thorough industry research, focusing on sectors like medical devices and technology. It's essential to familiarize yourself with industry jargon to avoid surprises during interviews. Proficiency in MS Office, especially Excel, is crucial. Research the company's projects and demonstrate your knowledge during the interview. Relate your experiences from internships, training, or college events to the role, asking pertinent questions about how your skills align with the company's objectives.

A few in the leadership may be published authors, podcasts hosts, or have written several thought leadership pieces in the industry. Knowing who on the team has a significant personal brand or influence in the industry will go a long way in understanding the brain trust that exists at the company. Without empty praise, referencing your knowledge of this body of content can make a big difference in showing your interest and starting a deeper conversation during an interview.

Focus less on the company itself than the industry and category. Employers will be more interested in your views and insights on their competitors, retailers, etc. than your views or understanding just within their four walls. Demonstrating real expertise of the world they live in will set you apart from other candidates that read a few things on their website.

Know their mission, values, and products, similar to learning about someone's passions. Identify customers, competitors, and industry trends as if discovering their circle of friends. Check for market research projects or reports they've shared, akin to understanding their thoughts and ideas. This brief prep helps you enter the interview like a well-informed friend, ready for a meaningful conversation.

I've conducted hundreds of interviews over my career and I'm shocked at how many people still do not devote enough effort to preparing questions. This is especially true for market research roles where curiosity is likely a skill they are looking for. I don't remember who to credit for this but one of my favorite questions is something like: "Thinking about people who have joined the company and been successful in the last couple of years, what key attributes did they bring to the table?" I would also have some question specific to the company prepared as well. Example: "You've launched three new products in category x recently. Will that be a continued focus for the business?"

Get curious about what drives revenue for the company and ask about how the team goes about focusing on winning approaches to growing the company. Caring about the revenue picture means caring about your future. Be prepared to ask what amount of time is created for employees to understand company-wide goals and develop smaller goals that can roll-up into the larger goals. Being interested in the company as a whole goes a long way in showing that you can be a successful team player and that you understand your duties to contribute.

It’s as important for an employer to understand what you’re looking to get out of the role, as it is for you to understand what they’re looking to get from you. These objectives should be aligned for the most part. Too often folks feel like interviews are one sided, when really you should look at the interview process as once that runs both ways. So be prepared to really dig in and determine if this employer aligns with your longer term career aspirations!

Self awareness goes a long way in any interview. If you're nervous simply acknowledging this can be the beginning of simply moving through some discomfort to have a better conversation. If you're a fast talker, be mindful to slow down, etc. The point is to showcase that you are aware of how you show up in a room and that you are able to read a room and be comfortable enough to suspend your particular natural style in order to respect the natural style of the interviewer(s). This allows for a better flow of conversation which is absolutely what should be the focus. At all costs, avoid monologues and don't sit so quietly as to force a monologue from the person interviewing you.

Check the LinkedIn profiles of the interviewers. You may have things in common which will help you build rapport. Focus on your relevant skills and communicate them clearly.

Talk about how you can bring value by developing new business, improving internal processes, training & mentoring other team members, etc.
