One thing I found most useful so far in my career is using Joins and Common table expressions (CTEs). Mainly for optimization and to improve the performance of the queries as well as sustainability. With subqueries, it may become difficult to understand when writing complex queries after say X number of months or years or even if a new member joins your team, however, CTEs make this bit somewhat easier in the long run.
