What are the most important questions to ask when interviewing for an AI analyst role?

It is well known that your model is as good as your data are. But simply having skills in data processing and manipulation is not enough. Data should be clearly understood, thus this makes understanding the domain a necessity. Along with understanding of the nature of the problem. Fall in love with your problem before you fall in love with the solution.

The most important question would be 'What on Earth is an "AI Analyst role"? Is that someone who has to deal with generic, AI-generated articles on social media, in an environment that incentivises its users to perform shallow simulacra of contributing?'

Employers should seek candidates who not only possess data skills but also have a strong grasp of the domain in which they will apply AI solutions.

One of the most important things, in my experience has been, to give a problem statement to the candidate and ask them to explain the approach to solve the same. No code, no generic concepts. If the candidate has hands-on experience mentioned in CV, they should be able to provide an approach and explain why they chose that particular set of steps. There will always be newer models and newer frameworks to learn, but the conceptual understanding of the problem and process is invaluable.

When interviewing for an AI analyst role, focus on these key questions. Inquire about the candidate's understanding of fundamental AI concepts & their ability to apply them in real-world scenarios. Assess their proficiency in relevant programming languages & tools, such as Python, TensorFlow, or PyTorch. Ask about their experience in data preprocessing, feature engineering, & model evaluation. Explore their problem-solving skills, especially when faced with complex AI challenges. Inquire about their knowledge of ethical considerations in AI and their approach to ensuring fairness & transparency. Finally, assess their communication skills, as effective collaboration & clear presentation of findings are crucial in an AI analyst role.

AI projects often require collaboration with experts from diverse fields, including computer science, mathematics, psychology, and more. Encourage candidates to share their experiences working in interdisciplinary teams and their ability to communicate complex AI concepts to non-technical stakeholders.

What is your approach to validating machine learning models? Machine learning models are the engine of an AI system or an AI analyst have to analyze those systems—they’re the components that learn from data and make decisions. But those models aren’t always right. In fact, they can often be wrong, leading to inaccurate predictions or poor decision-making. Thus, interviewers have to make sure that the candidate understand and have a clear and performed approach to validating these models to ensure they’re working as intended and providing accurate results.

Can you describe a specific example where you applied an AI solution to a business problem? What were the results and key learnings? Look for answers that include practical experience, ability to explain the AI workflow, and experience how to translate AI concepts into tangible outcomes.

In Artificial Intelligence, a machine will perform a specific action based on a specific condition only if it has gained an experience from the past. This is the differentiator of what knowledge in AI one has to possess. A person with knowledge in AI possesses a unique quality to statistically analyse and apply learnings in technology with the use of AI models. This applied knowledge in AI is very beneficial in solving business problems.

Probe into the candidate's understanding of fundamental AI concepts. Assess their grasp of machine learning algorithms and deep learning frameworks and their ability to apply these techniques to real-world problems. Inquire about their knowledge of model evaluation metrics and their awareness of current trends and advancements in artificial intelligence.

Inquire about the candidate's experience with real-world AI applications and their ability to translate AI concepts into practical solutions. AI analysts should be able to discuss specific projects where they've applied AI to solve business or industry challenges.

Complex and challenging tasks require teamwork. Therefore, a good analyst should be able to work effectively in a team - and coding with a team. Is the candidate able to co-design code? To document? To explain and listen to other solutions? Is he or she able to find common ground with his or her collaborators?

Definitely, number one programming language in this field is the Python. Why? Because most AI models are created using Python, so the Analysts should also know this language in my opinion. There are C++ and java implementations but usually as a part of Python packages and frontend. Libraries to know? Scikitlearn is there for evaluation, knowing tensorflow, keras, torch but also SHAP, Transformers, Yellowbrick, LIME, MLFlow, Nanny ML and Evidently.

Look for answers that show the candidate understood what and how it went wrong. They should have a good understanding of AI models abilities and shortcomings and approaches how to improve. Follow up by asking if they thought about incorporating RLHF or RLHAIF and how they would do that next time.

I would also add that being able to utilize Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) to optimize the output of large language models is becoming an important skill for an AI engineer.

In the current stream of AI Regulatory acts, the problem-solving skills need to be balanced by responsible solutions, not only solutions which solve a specific way to reach a goal. It’s no longer enough to think about solutions. We need a responsible AI driven path.

Explain how you would estimate … ? What you will be really asking: What’s your thought process? Are you an analytical thinker? With this type of question (sometimes called a guesstimate), the interviewer will present a problem to solve. How would you estimate the best month to offer a discount on shoes? How would you estimate the weekly profit of your favorite restaurant? For example. The purpose here is to evaluate the problem-solving ability and overall comfort working with numbers. Since this is about how the candidate think, ask him to think out loud as he work through the answer. What types of data would he need? Where might he find that data? Once you have the data, how would he use it to calculate an estimate? Powerful method

Being able to think analytically and independently solve issues is critical. I often as "how would you..." questions and if the answer is "I would ask you or a college", then I pass on the candidate. Solutions are available if one tries.

How do you approach the ethical implications of AI in decision-making processes? Look for an explanation of AI evaluation and what methods they use and why. The candidate should be able to think about ethical considerations and have an approach to navigate moral dilemmas. They should be familiar with Anthropic's constitutional AI approach.

I usually try to understand here 2 things: 1) how does the candidate stay up to date with changes in AI (curiosity) and 2) what is their motivation to work in this role (passion). There are boundless questions that could be asked of a candidate applying for an AI role. While questions commonly touch on technical competence, problem-solving, and communication, they miss a few essential aspects of the candidate. Attitude skills such as openness (willingness to learn and seek knowledge), determination (grit), and creativity identify someone who would make a great hire clear, invariant of role. Look for passion, not transaction.

Passion drives excellence in any role. Assess the candidate's enthusiasm for AI by inquiring about personal projects, continuous learning initiatives, or participation in relevant communities. A curious and proactive mindset often leads to staying updated on emerging technologies and a commitment to enhancing one's skills.

What AI resource would you recommend to a technical person and a non-technical person, and why? (Demonstrates understanding of their enthusiasm by suggesting a unique resource based on technical proficiency.)

Evaluating Tools & Technologies- What specific AI and machine learning tools and frameworks are used by the team? How are models developed, deployed, and monitored? What are the plans for adopting new technologies and methodologies? Measuring Success & Impact- How is the success of AI projects measured? What are the key metrics used to evaluate the impact of AI initiatives? How are ethical considerations and potential biases addressed in the AI development process? Assessing Project Scope & Data Landscape- What are the current AI projects being undertaken by the team? What types of data will I be working with, and how is it accessed and managed?

AI is in most situations evaluated using predictive analysis, diagnostic potential, sometimes using composite scores, so Statistical knowledge, in combination with AI domain knowledge is key ingredient of the formula for anyone looking to be advanced in AI evaluation.

Personally I like to go a bit outside of the box. For example, I like to ask questions that look deep into the candidate's experience with specific AI projects and their outcomes. Inquire about their approach to staying updated with the ever-evolving AI landscape and how they apply new learnings to real-world scenarios. Questions about their experience in working with cross-functional teams can also reveal their ability to integrate AI insights into broader business strategies. For me, the most important is to ask about their ethical considerations in AI applications. It can provide insight into their awareness and handling of the potential impacts of AI solutions.
