One of the most important lessons I learned from a failed startup is the need to thoroughly validate your idea before going all in. In my early entrepreneurial journey, I had an idea that I believed would work, but I didn’t spend enough time testing it with potential customers. This led to wasted resources and a product that didn’t meet real market needs. Validation involves gathering feedback, conducting surveys, and running small experiments to ensure your solution solves an actual problem. Taking the time to validate not only saves money but also increases the likelihood of long-term success.

Be intentional with hiring. Do workforce planning and base hiring on milestones. Too often, Headcount Budgets are approved and all positions are posted at once. Certain positions need to be hired before others.

Cash is THE thing. That is why they call it the king! I am old fashioned in the sense that if you are not creating a positive cash flow you are not a business. You may be on your way to becoming a business, but technically you are a zombie. So many companies exist with no concept of a path of how to sustain without constant infusion...of course there is the ramp and investing in market share and a plethora of other scenarios where you will have TEMPORARY cash drain, but this should be temporary to invest in a better position.....don't be a zombie.

One thing I've found helpful in managing cashflow for new businesses is to make sure you have at least X months of "cash burn" planned out in your ramp up phase. We buy hotels so our "startups" are a bit different than the standard definition of one, but they are active businesses just like any other startups. We make sure we have at least 12 months of expenses calculated into our pro forma from the start to make sure we are budgeting enough money for the hotel purchase.

Having a strong and competent team in place is one of the first few requirements any stakeholder will look for before working with your startup. A great idea without a good team is bound to fail, but, an average idea with a great team in place has better chances of success. Founders tend to fall in love with their ideas and fail at building a team to execute the idea. With a competent team, it is easy to pivot your ideas as many times as needed, but a great idea would collapse without a competent team in place.

Choose your business partners wisely—diversity of opinions, complimentary skill sets, and being able to have honest conversations and address conflict is key but most importantly alignment on values. Without that, no matter how great the vision is and the collective power you harness in your team, in the long run you're unlikely to succeed at the level you envision

Kind of presumptuous to ask me to contribute to this topic LOL! Anyway, one big mistake startup founders make is not being willing to "take out the trash", literally and figuratively. IIRC that's an actual line from an old Netflix slide: don't hire anyone who isn't willing to do what it takes to make the company succeed because they're preoccupied with their status. Ask everyone you hire if they'd be willing to answer customer emails for an hour a day, for example. If they say no, no worries, they might be a genius developer and absolutely belong elsewhere, but they're not startup material. As a rule, everyone at Amazon did this once a year, including Bezos.

If we are creating a new market, without losing the initial objective, we will have to learn that the challenge will be much greater, since in the process we will also have new rules and that will imply that the startup will be much more dynamic.

My most recent start-up had an extended learning curve - much longer than was forecasted in our business plan. Perhaps we under-estimated the complexity of the start-up, as it was to some degree an extension of the products and processes in a sister plant. Probably the biggest learning was managing to an accelerated timeline - during COVID - which got the plant built in record time but the workforce (training, culture, discipline) lagging well behind. It's because you will always need to do things that' you have not done before -> there will always be uncertainty. (unless you have already walked the path you are walking)

If you don't quit and you keep going until you've achieved your outcome then it's impossible to actually fail.
