Understanding the key interview questions for candidates new to BPO is crucial. The question "Why do you want to work in BPO?" is strategic for assessing the candidate's motivation and interest in the sector. It is vital to avoid generic answers such as "I need a job" or "I like talking to people". Instead, I always expect candidates to highlight specific benefits offered by BPO, such as the opportunity to learn new skills, interact with clients and diverse cultures, solve challenges and boost their career development.

When we are looking to hire entry level candidates, the domain for which they are being hired should be the primary focus. Depending on the domain, the candidates need to be identified basis their education. When we are hiring entry level, it is given that they will not have significant experience. What we should be looking at as to whatever was taught in college have they understand that. My questions will be around the domain basics evaluating if they have a proper understanding of the basics. Second is the attitude. Are they willing to invest in their learning during early part of their career or they think that learning phase is over with the college. Responses to questions in these two category will determine the outcome.

And finally, customer orientation and attention to detail are pillars for providing good quality services.

Dealing with upset customers stands out as particularly challenging, requiring the skill to soothe them and provide reassurance by offering solutions, which can be exceedingly tough.

In a BPO project in the area of Controllership, interviews for entry-level candidates focused on assessing specific technical skills in controllership. Key questions sought to understand the candidates' experience not only with tools such as accounting systems and financial analysis software, but also in their understanding of accounting, tax and profit analysis principles. We also assessed the candidate's ability to integrate tools and analyze data generated for reporting and decision-making.

A candidate’s proficiency in basic applications like the MS Office suite is very important. In finance outsourcing there is constant engagement with external stakeholders or management and a need to produce ad hoc materials, reports, summarise insights from data sets, etc. A candidate that can produce high quality output will be very valuable. How hard can MS Office be..? There’s a big difference between an entry level employee who produces material ready for a client vs one that absorbs management effort. It’s very important to understand the work habits and ethics of every candidate to fit for a diverse culture in BPO. Candidate should be ready and with openness in working with different culture for better team work.

Although cultural diversity is often associated with ethnic or regional differences, I recognize that teams made up of members from different age groups can also represent a wealth of perspectives and experiences, similar to cultural diversity. So, in my experience on a project to implement a new accounting system, the team was made up of juniors, recent graduates with little practical experience, and seniors with years of experience in the field. Working together, the junior members contributed enthusiasm and fresh ideas, while the senior members provided guidance and sound technical knowledge. This team dynamic resulted in an effective combination of innovation and experience.

Having a diverse team with different backgrounds is a mix of different raw materials that if used wisely and run through proper grooming can end up with a very valuable final product (team) that's well be integrated and complements each other, so rather than focusing on how differences could be a barrier we need to look for the opportunities in it and promote a culture of acceptance and cooperation.

Instead of focusing only on what happened in the past, feedforward focuses on future actions and potential improvements. There are different types of BPOs - some strategic and some more transactional. Also, there are varying career paths across a BPO in addition to service delivery roles. Entry level team members are needed across client onboarding, service improvement, project & programme management, commercial, contracting, data analytics, business development and more. It's extremely important align the interview approach with these pathways to source the right candidates. Getting it right at the door, with the right people in the right roles will have a considerable impact to the service in terms of increased quality, increased efficiencies, positive culture and reduced attrition.

In the BPO world, a key characteristic for incoming hires is the ability to adapt. Certain backgrounds and even cultures can help foster this but the only way to find out is to put them in the seat. Of course, the requisite skills and attitude need to be there. You can pre-test for personality type all you want but you only know if any one individual will thrive in the environment once they are in. Always set up a trial period with a feedback loop. Keep and nurture the individuals that adapt.

The key part of the original question was entry-level and quite frankly if you need to ask why someone has applied for a role at a BPO, it’s pretty safe to say money would be a primary factor. Interviews should be more focussed on finding if there’s a core skills match as well as persona and work style/ethics alignment with the business. As systems training etc should be a necessary part of onboarding/induction training.
