This will be very important and often it is either user-friendly for building or user-friendly for the learner. You may have to decide what is more important. Are you going to be building often or just once with small updates? Also, often if they are user-friendly they tend to lack in other features like complex reporting. Keep in mind what is most important to you and your business.

This should be the number one consideration because most Learning Management Systems are merely a database yet many are too cumbersome. For some reason developers have chosen to make many LMS clunky, difficult to use and archaic in both use and appearance.

Support for diverse instructional design approaches, including blended learning, flipped classrooms, and competency-based education, to accommodate varied pedagogical needs and learning styles.

On the point of communication and collaboration, what type of environment are you in? Are you purchasing an LMS for an office environment where you are tracking basic eLearning and some other mandatory face to face training like Workplace Violence or Basic Hazard Assessment? Or are you in a school environment where you are tracking multiple assignments with group projects that last over a 2-4 month term or longer? If you are in a workplace environment, there are probably a lot of collaboration tools (too many most likely) that are already being utilized like teams or slack. In a school environment, especially when working on things like group or term projects a collaborative tool in an LMS makes a lot more sense and will provide value.

Collaboration features such as group workspaces, project management tools, and peer review capabilities to support collaborative learning activities and group projects.

You need to consider what kind of LMS will work best for your organization. For example, a trade school or university will have very different needs for tracking learning, exams and assignments than a workplace. If you are working in an office, your training needs and tracking the training will be very different than a warehouse or processing facility that is highly regulated. If you are in a highly regulated industry, you need to find an LMS that will allow you to track things like certifications and recertifications (e.g., First Aid), where as in a school environment courses are taken and completed one time only and are counted towards a larger goal (e.g. Bachelors Degree or Journeyman's Certificate).

Learning Management Systems should facilitate more than just than content delivery. Content alone does not change behavior. If your LMS is not infused with learning tools grounded in psychology and learning science, there is a gap that is critical for behavior change. The human component that is critical for behavior changed is typically lost with technology, but with the right learning partner and tool the potential is powerful for knowledge retention and behavior changes.

Learning Management Systems are rapidly advancing, with a constantly expanding feature set. Before you start down this path, have a clear list of what you need the system to do. Have a vision of how your learning efforts will improve and what you can do differently with the new system in place. If you don't have clarity around those points... why would you spend the money?

An LMS needs to work with advanced features, such as the ability to get into a course and edit that course. We use a very clunky LMS. It has several features, but it is difficult to create courses, edit courses, and have assessments. Getting around the LMS to look for courses offered and how to find the data needed is very difficult. The analytics piece is not user-friendly. When looking for specific information, it does not provide direction on what report or even what section to find it.
