Yes, for sure technical skills must be there, because it is 'digital' forensics, so digital skills are required. Digital forensics is built upon different skills, skills in analyzing operating systems, mobile devices, network packets, etc. Also, required skills in acquiring the intact images of different electronic devices, and so on. In digital forensics, you need to be able to connect the dots to have the full picture.

Digital forensics is not only about technical skills, but also about legal skills. You should be aware of the relevant laws, regulations, standards, and ethical principles that govern your work and affect your evidence. You should be able to follow the proper procedures and protocols to ensure the integrity, authenticity, and admissibility of your evidence in court or other legal settings. You should also be able to document your findings and actions in a clear, concise, and accurate manner, using appropriate terminology and formats. I feel sometimes that I am a lawyer in some cases, because you should know a lot in the legal aspect. You should request for a warrant, you should handle the evidence very carefully, you should document everything, write a report summing up all details and facts, present your findings in the court and justify them. People who interacted with the evidence must be recorded in the Chain of Custody (CoC), and a lot more.

Digital forensics is also about analytical skills, such as critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. You should be able to apply logical reasoning and scientific methods to your investigations, and use evidence-based approaches to test your hypotheses and draw your inferences. You should also be able to identify and overcome the challenges and limitations of your data, tools, and techniques, and find alternative solutions or workarounds when needed. Furthermore, you should be able to recognize and avoid the biases and errors that can affect your analysis, such as confirmation bias, tunnel vision, or cognitive dissonance, and seek feedback and peer review to improve your quality and reliability.

Digital forensics is not only about hard skills, but also about soft skills, such as communication, collaboration, and time management. You should be able to communicate effectively and professionally with your colleagues, clients, and stakeholders, and use appropriate language and tone for different situations and purposes. You should also be able to work well in a team and share your knowledge and expertise with others, as well as learn from their feedback and experience. Additionally, you should be able to manage your time and prioritize your tasks efficiently and realistically, and cope with the stress and pressure that can arise from your work.

Always read and practice more on the trendy technologies, try to understand their inner working. Also, try to learn updates in OS, network protocols, mobile devices, etc. because new artifacts may appear each update/upgrade. Build your home lab to practice digital forensic skills by making a fake scenario with fake actions and try to find more artifacts for that. In addition, nowadays, there are plenty of online resources and labs that you can read or practice even online, so take advantage of those!! Finally, you can have some organized paths in digital forensics and take some certifications in the field.
