What are the most important device driver skills to have?

From my experience, C is the most widely used language in driver development. Other languages have limited use in the supervisor mode.

Con las constantes actualizaciones de los sistemas operativos, ya sea por funcionalidad o por seguridad, es crucial asegurar que las funcionalidades básica del dispositivo continúen estando accesibles para el usuario final y no se vean afectadas por dichas actualizaciones. Por ese motivo es fundamental conocer la arquitectura general y los procesos y subprocesos del sistema operativo. En simultaneo se debe tener en cuenta y evitar atar la funcionalidad de los controladores a versiones o parches específicos del sistema operativo para el que estamos desarrollando, logrando una mejor compatibilidad.

El conocimiento del hardware particular para el que se va a desarrollar un controlador es fundamental, pero también lo es saber si ese dispositivo formará parte de un sistema más grande. De ser así se deberá conseguir la mayor información posible sobre el funcionamiento y características del sistema global. Contar con esa información permitirá al desarrollador tener una mirada más amplia para evitar cuellos de botellas, conflictos de recursos o bugs.

The most important tool is s the stuff between your ears, also known as brain. You use it to study the hardware that your driver will be interfacing, and the driver framework abstraction to understand what your driver will need to accomplish with said hardware. If you get a full understanding of these, you will not need to do much debugging. If your hardware functionality disagrees with the documentation you used to understand it, you will be debugging the hardware using hardware debugging tools. But no amount of debugging could ever replace a solid design at start, only delay the admission of failure. Device drivers is not for the faint of heart and if you find this comment harsh, find something else to do.

Tener acceso al modelo de simulación, o al prototipo de hardware, su hoja técnica/de datos y a los esquemas de funcionamiento y flujo resulta fundamental a la hora de depurar el código. Así mismo es importante la buena documentación de las variables y configuraciones que desencadenan el error. Así mismo documentar y mantener un buen historial de versionado con todos los cambios, y el porqué de esos cambios. No se debe descartar pedir una segunda opinión si se cuenta con colaboradores/compa?eros que puedan dar una mirada fresca sobre la problemática que se trata de resolver.

Being a techie and working with various technology verticals within my industry, I guess having a single skill set stopping you somewhere. I guess I have a skill to adapt new technologies by upgrading myself helping me a lot to stay in the race. Perhaps having a little experience with all above 5 parameters could help me to develop my own ideas and build my skills.
