2 Power consumption

Another important design constraint for an FPGA is the power consumption. Power consumption is influenced by several factors, such as the number and type of logic resources used, the operating frequency, the switching activity, the supply voltage, and the temperature. Power consumption affects not only the energy efficiency and the battery life of your system, but also the reliability and the thermal management of your FPGA. High power consumption can cause overheating, which can degrade the performance and the lifespan of your FPGA. Therefore, you should design your FPGA with low power techniques, such as clock gating, dynamic voltage and frequency scaling, power-aware synthesis and placement, and thermal-aware routing.

FPGA power consumption depends on chip technology, clock frequency, number of registers, signal loads and signal rates. In most cases, power consumption determines the power of secondary sources that you will need to be used on the electronic board and a chip temperature.

3 Interface compatibility

A third important design constraint for an FPGA is the interface compatibility. Interface compatibility refers to the ability of your FPGA to communicate with other components and devices in your system, such as processors, sensors, actuators, memory, and peripherals. Interface compatibility depends on the type and number of input/output (I/O) pins, the I/O standards, the protocols, and the timing requirements of your FPGA. For example, if your FPGA needs to interface with a high-speed serial device, you may need to use a dedicated transceiver block that supports the appropriate standard and protocol. Interface compatibility also affects the signal integrity and the noise immunity of your FPGA, as you have to deal with issues such as crosstalk, reflections, ground bounce, and electromagnetic interference. First of all, you need to determine the required interfaces, the number of pins, signal levels and data transfers rates. Research prices of IDE, IP-cores and microchips from different brands. Create an empty project with required signals.

FPGA is the most compact placement for user signals. The problem with electronic board sizing is mainly related to the number and size of external components and connectors, so large board is often divided into modules. You can usually choose a type of chip package, but keep in mind that if you use a smaller chip size then the PCB accuracy and tolerance, manufacturing and assembly cost of your board may increase. The small board size is also less convenient for debugging and prototyping purpose.

A fifth important design constraint for an FPGA is the testing and debugging. Testing and debugging refer to the process of verifying and correcting the functionality and the performance of your FPGA. Testing and debugging are essential for ensuring the quality and the reliability of your FPGA, as they can help you identify and fix any errors, bugs, or defects in your design. Testing and debugging can be done at different levels, such as simulation, emulation, prototyping, and in-circuit testing. The last important design constraint for an FPGA is the trade-offs and optimization. Trade-offs and optimization refer to the process of balancing and improving the various design constraints that we have discussed, such as logic resources, power consumption, interface compatibility, physical dimensions, and testing and debugging. Trade-offs and optimization are necessary for achieving the best possible performance and quality of your FPGA, as they can help you meet your specifications and requirements, as well as your budget and schedule. Trade-offs and optimization can be done at different stages, such as specification, synthesis, placement, routing, and verification. Trade-offs and optimization can also involve different methods and tools, such as constraints, parameters, algorithms, and software. Therefore, you should design your FPGA with careful trade-offs and optimization decisions and evaluations.

In brief there are 3 approaches that we can consider: 1. Building an SoC and adding an embedded FPGA into the fabric for something that is programmable. 2. Using an FPGA as a separate chip alongside the ASIC. 3. Embed a processor inside an FPGA(Xilinx Zynq 7000 series). But FPGAs are physically getting bigger, and so are the challenges associated with that growth. Debugging becomes a huge challenge. Then what is the solution? Answer: Verilog The primary task of the design team is to write efficient Verilog code. For high performance, the Verilog must be modified when moving from hard-wired ASIC to FPGA to put in more pipelining stages. The more design teams invest in optimizing the Verilog, the better the performance.

Compare FPGA with other solutions. Nowadays we have fast DSP processors, fast floating point microcontrollers (400MHz and more) or even multi-core microcontrollers like XMOS (16 and more cores at 500MHz and more). To implement signal processing, mathematics, state machines and control algorithms it can be more convenient and cheaper on a processor unit.
