What are the most important IT audit career paths and opportunities for you to explore?

Career paths for IT Auditors are wide ranging. The career journey can start as a Service Desk Officer, PC Support, and/or Network Administrator. With a few years’ experience and proven success, an IT Officer can progress to a IT Auditor role. The most common career advancements for an IT Auditor include jobs as a consultant, Risk Analyst, Security Analyst, Data Analyst, Business Analyst and further can be a Chief Information Officer or a Senior Management in a firm.

So as an Internal IT Auditor, one gets exposed to security audits, general control audits and in many cases IT Governance audits. This is where an Auditor can maximize the opportunity to collaborate with both IT and ERM teams to tackle emerging risks/threats. This also exposes an Auditor to IT service management, Contract management, looking at third-party risk and strategic alignment of IT to the organization. From all that auditing, testing and exposure you now have the "know how" to manage any IT operation or functional area within IT. So there's a lot of knowledge to be gained as an internal IT Auditor and from there you can simply choose an area that u want to specialize in.

They also monitor and report on the security incidents and breaches. They have a master or Post master degree in IT-Auditing and advisory and registered with NOREA (in Netherlands) and hold certifications such as CISSP, CISA, or CISM. They can advance their career by becoming senior IT security auditors, IT security audit managers, or IT security audit directors

An IT Security Auditor is a nearly extinct species that is, unlike their counterparts financial auditors, only trained by short running courses followed by a quiz. The security domain is too broad to fully master and therefore a lot of clout is used to compensate the uncertainty of not knowing. Mostly, the auditees have no idea of processes, process criteria, clear design specifications or validation methods. They just want the auditor to take the responsibility for their lack of understanding, believing that secure by tooling is secure. The better auditors are high in demand, but being a pain in the a§§, often underpaid. Most of them quit early because they earn better as consultant.
