Parents have feedback and know their student, better than anyone. Working with a parent, whether it is to better understand a student, better prepare lessons, or just to build community, is vital to the success of any teacher.

As an advocate for educational technology, I appreciate its vast benefits. Yet, I firmly adhere to the adage, 'Just because it can be done, doesn't mean it should be done.' As portals become big business and increasingly competitive, some are becoming product-led rather than market-led. Many convince school leaders and owners of the efficient and magical ways to deliver communication to parents. However, I strongly urge remembering that effective communication should prioritise 'receiver needs' over 'sender needs.' It's becoming increasingly common for parents to miss key information, and the standard reply, 'it was on the school portal,' does more to relieve the school of responsibility than to build a harmonious school community.
