What are the most effective ways to stay motivated while working in a library?

A mí me ha resultado útil medir ciertas acciones que realizamos en la biblioteca para saber cómo lo reciben nuestras usuarios y usuarias. Por ejemplo, el número en la cantidad de préstamos, nuevos seguidores en redes sociales, engagement en publicaciones, etc. De esta forma uno puede encontrar una motivación para saber si seguir haciendo ciertas cosas y saber cuál desechar.

In my experience set a goal that can show how versatile and flexible you are and that you are up to the task at hand. In that way your employer can see how well you handled something and could be used again at another time

A lo largo de toda mi carrera en la Biblioteca Pública Digital, siempre me ha gustado tener la opinión de los demás en ciertas acciones comunicacionales que ideo para publicar en redes sociales. Esta acción permite tener otros puntos de vistas que pueden aportar a mejorar u observar ciertas cosas que uno no se da cuenta en un primer análisis. Esto ayuda a motivarme con el trabajo que hago y a presentar más seguridad en las ideas que vengan a futuro.

For those who work in public services or reference, know that your efforts are so important for the patrons. On the first day at the desk of a public library more than 26 years ago, I fielded a call from "Jessie." She was well-known and very high-demand in the community. She valued the information I was able to secure during the internet Stone Ages of the late 1990s. Sometimes testy, she was also appreciative. I later worked at other libraries. Jessie stayed in touch with reference questions that other librarians could not answer. Her last call to me was to say she had only a few days to live as her pacemaker failed, and she wanted to thank me for my assistance over many years. Many librarians have similar stories of how we help others.

Brindar un buen servicio al usuario: En la Biblioteca Pública Digital pasa que nos llegan muchas consultas de las y los usuarios. Estas, por lo general, están relacionadas a problemas en los archivos de los libros digitales. Una forma de estar motivado en el trabajo es ir resolviendo caso a caso las consultas que nos hacen llegar. Un caso resuelto es una usuaria o usuario feliz con algún libro que quiere leer en nuestra biblioteca.

In the public library its those encounters with the patrons that really can make or break you. If a patron asks me for help then I try to get a grasp on what it is they need by doing reference interviews. Most of the time I can find the item they are looking for I am especially good at movies when they talk about its plot and who is in the movie. As for me they really appreciate my help and it makes me feel good that I was able to be of help to someone.

Esto es realmente clave a la hora de elegir intereses personales para tener un clima laboral agradable y a la vez solucionar requerimientos que tienen siempre que ver con la sociedad del conocimiento. Es importante disfrutar y transmitir pasión por la biblioteca y su quehacer

Why not visit some other libraries and see how they do things there? You can do this ‘under cover’ or reach out to the staff and ask if you can visit. In my experience, librarians are happy to host a visitor and spend some time chatting about library things! You can often find motivation by visiting a different type of library and thinking about how you might apply some of its approaches in your own library. Can a public library program be ‘tweaked’ for a more academic context? Does a university library display its books in a way that would work in your school library? Other libraries can be great sources of inspiration!

Conectar con las y los usuarios: Una de las formas más directas para verificar que tu trabajo tiene un impacto directo y motivarte con lo que haces es la comunicación con las personas que interactúan y usan tu biblioteca. De esta manera, ya sea en forma presencial o a través de canales digitales, podremos observar de qué manera nuestro trabajo es recibido por aquellos que se benefician de nuestro servicio. De esta manera también podremos saber qué cosas mejorar de nuestro quehacer diario.

Know your colleagues, their repositories, and the best networks to meet your personal, professional, and patrons' needs. No single library, archive, or institution will have every source that we need. Understanding the gaps in our collections and resources is important. Learning what our consortial partners have is a way to fill these gaps. Interlibrary loan is how libraries have met the needs of patrons for generations; strengthening support networks and fortifying our professional relationships across libraries allows us to expand our reach and bring valuable resources to our patrons.

Visit other libraries if your in a system or not and see how they feel. I have had that experience before and its a good experience for anyone and you can learn a lot from it.

Este a?o comencé a estudiar un máster en Comunicación Transmedia en la Universidad Internacional de La Rioja. En un momento del a?o comencé a experimentar crisis de pánico, a raíz de la ansiedad que se intensificó en mí a raíz de los estudios que estoy cursando. La terapia psicológica, además, de entregarme herramientas para hacerle frente a la ansiedad en el ámbito académico, también me ayudó a enfrentar los desafíos del día a día en el trabajo. De esta forma uno desarrolla habilidades para poder sortear las dificultades que se presenten en la jornada laboral y también te ayuda a motivarte con el trabajo que realizas.

Self care is the most important part of each and every day. In order to be best version of you, you need to love and respect yourself by remembering to first take care of your needs. I like to remind myself that I can do anything, but I can’t do everything. So self care for me looks like keeping healthy professional boundaries, taking small periods of mental, physical, and emotional rest throughout the day, and taking time off of the job at times in the year when I know that I won't be returning to piles of work that I'll need to play catch-up or risk stressing myself out all over again. It also looks like setting realistic expectations of myself and my colleagues. Being mindful of others' boundaries help remind them to be mindful of yours.

Esto es lo que busca el ser humano y lo que nuestras madres y padres han querido para nosotros al momento de entregar crianza y cari?o, ser felices trae responsabilidades y una de ella es cuidar de nosotros mismos

Mantener un aprendizaje continuo: Desde siempre me ha gustado estudiar. Haber realizado el Diplomado en Periodismo Cultural, Crítica y Edición de Libros, de la Universidad de Chile; y estar actualmente estudiando el Máster en Comunicación Transmedia, de la Universidad Internacional de La Rioja, me ayudan a mantener una motivación con el trabajo. De igual manera, cursos más cortos que ofrecen plataforma como Doméstika también me han ayudado.

Staying motivated in the school library involves focusing on the positive impact on students' learning, setting achievable goals for improvement, creating a welcoming space, collaborating with teachers, embracing continuous learning through professional development, connecting with students to tailor services, innovating with new technologies and programs, celebrating successes, prioritizing self-care to avoid burnout, and seeking regular feedback for continuous improvement.

Proponer nuevas acciones comunicacionales: Periódicamente, en la Biblioteca Pública Digital estoy proponiendo acciones comunicacionales que ayuden a la dinamización de las colecciones que tenemos para las y los usuarios. Esto ayuda a mantener la motivación al buscar diferentes maneras de mostrar a las personas los títulos. Por ejemplo, hace unos a?os integramos a la Biblioteca Pública Digital el #RetoLectorBPDigital, que consiste en que las personas lean un libro mensual de una temática diferente cada mes.

Each day there are new challenges and new things to learn. As a law librarian, I have the opportunity to help people with their challenges and to aid in learning opportunities. Every day I can reflect that I have a wonderful role as a law librarian.
