What are the most effective ways to stand out as a leader in your current role?

After understanding strengths and areas of opportunity, I've always found it helpful to be transparent about these pieces with teams (especially the latter part.) It shows you're aware of areas you need to work on, invites them in to help be accountability partners, and communicates that you are human too -- and working on closing gaps in key development areas. This vulnerability and insight signals to the team that it's okay not to be perfect and that everyone, including the person with the title, has improvement areas. Earnestly leverage this to engage in a two-way feedback dialogue. As a leader, your job is to offer feedback, but calling your growth areas out gives an inroad to feedback for you from a direct report.

In my experience, fostering a culture of continuous learning, encouraging open dialogue, and leading by example have proven to be key. Self awareness is your best friend. This is where the 80/20 rule comes into play. When you know your strengths you build confidence and awareness of what to look for when you hire: your weak spots! When you can speak to your strengths you will start attracting the complimentary teammates, leaders and customers you are looking for. When we speak to what everyone wants to hear we will always over promise and under deliver because we could be overcompensating for our areas we can improve on. Knowledge is power, but clarity is priceless!

This should be for both personal and operational goals, so if you've spent the time to understand where you need to focus development efforts, prioritise based on what the company needs from you to be successful. I used to view feedback from a selective lens. I will hear it from some and not hear it from others. In the end, this mindset hurt me more than anyone else. Feedback is critical to success. Own all the good and the bad. When you own everything you own your power. When we blame we lose our power. This was a hard lesson to learn, but the most liberating when finally mastered. It is a conscious choice to work in a proactive mindset. It takes practice and intentionality but worth the effort. You cannot grow if you are constantly in a reactive (survival mode). When your team knows the impact they are making, the value they bring and the success the team is creating the momentum will continue. Who doesn't want to know the good stuff?? Emotional deposits will always counteract the withdrawals that will ultimately come.

Adapt your leadership style accordingly to suit their needs and the situation - there is a place for different styles and it is possible to learn how to flex them effectively if it doesn’t come naturally to you. Invest time in learning leadership, as it is a skill.

Simon Sinek's advice to, "Be the leader you wish you had," reminds us to lead in whatever role we're in. A leader is anyone who cares about the success of those around them and works to support people in that success. This means anyone can lead from any role. The way to lead is to listen to the people around you, build trust, and then help provide the support people need in any way you can. This may mean connecting them to a resource or another person in the organization, coaching them through a challenging situation, providing mentoring advice, or being a thought partner to brainstorm.

All of these are great points. Gratitude is a subset of attitude, and attitude is everything. If you set your mind to serving over managing, using your voice to be helpful, encouraging and supporting the team, always improving your technical, emotional, social, and communication skills, being humble, empathetic, and open and not defensive or sarcastic, staying intellectually curious, seeking to help others succeed and achieve their goals, and taking ownership in your sphere of influence = fulfill the client's need, don't just do the job, you will inevitably stand out. Then, double down on patience, as maintaining that attitude will build the trust with your leadership that will lead to being given increased responsibility.

Please don't use Micromanagement - give your team room to explore ways and solutions, and get in if they need backup or necessary. This will make your team grow and become leaders someday. Do not repair it if it is not broken, if you introduce new systems and ways do it at the right time and proper venue. This will cause chaos if not properly handled and done at the wrong time. Do not pass on the stress and anxiety to your team, control your emotions. Pour out encouragement to your team. You will be the pillar of your team that they can lean on when they are down, and manage your emotions. These are the things mostly missed out by some leaders.
