What are the most effective ways to show that you are a quick learner?

Feedback can provide a non-biased assessment from valued peers. It helps you improve performance, technique, and delivery of the work you put out. Think of it as a means to enhance your skills and not as criticism.

Ask questions which demonstrate your comprehension and seek to understand more of the situation. Consider the obvious and question yourself before you question others.

One thing I’ve found helpful is Stakeholder Centered Coaching because it is built around feedback. Feedback is a game changer for building teams, and sharing how you’re growing. Feedback puts others first. Want to get started? Ask this simple question: what are 1-2 things I can do to become a better team member. Then carefully listen (not dispute). Reflect and then provide feedback on what you tried, what worked and most importantly what you’ll do going forward!

Demonstrate your ability to adapt by quickly grasping new concepts, actively seeking challenges, and showcasing successful outcomes from your learning experiences. Additionally, emphasize instances where you've applied acquired knowledge to solve problems or contribute to projects efficiently.

A common issue with seeking feedback is the fear of an intrapersonal conflict impeding asking feedback. I was coaching a mentee and I recommend the following if you fear that asking for feedback will lead to reprisal (or vice versa) 1. Pre wire with your leadership, they probably know about the issue anyway, let them know you’re meeting it head on 2. Reach out to see if the person would even be willing. I prefer to get feedback with people’s names attached (vs anonymous) as it gives both parties more responsibility 3. Assume positive intent. Even when there have been professional strain, most people won’t act irresponsibly when their name attached to the words. If they do, it can be easy coaching the other way.

Embracing a challenge could be like pressing the refresh button. It can break the usual cycle and if you like it, the monotonous. Like a child trying to ride a bicycle or climb a tree for the first time ??. Pass or fail, doesn’t matter. It’s the experience and the learning that one gains. Until it’s tried it’s not gained!

All CEOs are seeking leaders who embrace challenges. They share with me they can hire someone to complete the “TPS report” yet they need more thinkers and planners. Embracing challenges comes with thinking and planning. We must plan for as much as possible so when the plan comes to fruition, we only have to worry about the few unplanned things (if they occur). In order to plan well, we need time to think. How often have we seen teams react when we need to be proactive? It’s hard but not impossible to make the change. One thing to try: take 5 minutes and unplug from people, phones and places. Be present, listen to what’s around you and just be still. Taking as little as 5 minutes a day is the start to creating better thinking and planning.

Embracing challenges is where a quick learner truly shines. It's not just about acquiring new knowledge but also about applying it to navigate through uncharted waters. Moreover, embracing challenges involves more than just being a hero in high-stakes situations; it's about incorporating daily habits that foster growth. A quick learner sees every task as an opportunity to push boundaries. E.g., they may automate routine tasks, saving valuable time and resources. This constant pursuit of growth through challenges sets a quick learner apart and makes them an exemplar of adaptability and continuous improvement. By embracing challenges, quick learners showcase their ability to thrive in dynamic environments and inspire others to do the same.

Embracing challenges really allows those self starters to shine. Quick learners will tackle difficult projects often proving their ability to problem solve, communicate with team members and determine solutions and best practices often working independently.

Collaborating across functions to address significant issues or handle high-profile accounts is a clear method to demonstrate quick learning to multiple decision-makers and teammates. Being part of a team can provide a secure environment to showcase ideas and apply new knowledge.

I made this mistake too many times before I finally learned: share my learnings. Don’t get me wrong, I shared what I was learning-but I forgot one person in the sharing. My manager. I was so busy building partnerships with stakeholders that I forgot to loop back and share with my manager. That one mistake made my manager wonder what I was doing and why I didn’t have any questions. I thought my job was keep problems off my manager’s desk. Actually my job was to share what was going on (the good and bad), so we could better plan for the future. One thing to try: schedule a quick weekly meeting with your manager and send 3 bullet points to your manager before the meeting to highlight your learnings (the good and the bad).

I love sharing new things with my team, you never know if it may work for others! Either way, it's something that promotes a team mentality.

I have been a proponent for sharing what I know for most of my career. Sharing your knowledge does two important things in my opinion: 1) It empowers people with confidence to do more for the organization and make better decisions. 2) It sets up the person who shared their knowledge as a leader in that space or about a topic. When you are considered the go-to person about something important, people will come back to learn more from you. Don't 'protect' your knowledge and consider yourself indispensable because you are the only one who knows something. Share that knowledge and collaborate with your colleagues, so they know you are actually the subject matter expert.

Understanding where to gather data to dissect a problem or opportunity provides you with the ability to respond quickly. The experience you gain from gathering resources allows you to expand your understanding.

Approaching learning from a curiosity standpoint and with a growth mindset can accelerate learning. Being curious encourages you to ask questions and seek solutions in ways that are creative and efficient. Both curiosity and growth mindset foster adaptability. The world is in constantly evolving, and cultivating these traits can help you embrace change, learn new skills and adapt to situations with ease.

Being resourceful is a HUGE advantage versus having to ask a busy colleague or time constrained manager. It demonstrates initiative, follow through, gumption, drive, and being a team player... Not just a contributor trying to get pats on the back.

These days, it's so easy to rely on quick go-tos like Google that some other really useful methods get overlooked. Most tools and products have some manual or documentation. Sometimes, they even have dedicated communities or forums which are goldmines for in-depth expertise. Similarly, reaching out to support via creating a ticket or email can also have tremendous benefits. When posting, treat it like a work email, provide plenty of context, information, even screenshots, and detail what you've attempted. Perhaps some of it has to be abstracted because it's proprietary, perhaps not. Either way, you might not get an answer immediately, but I've had pleasant surprises in the midnight hour thanks to sending something out earlier.

In my experience, the best way to exhibit that you are a fast learner, especially when starting a new role, is to shift your mindset to "learning mode." When you have your mindset set to learning mode, you begin to pick up on the high level themes and jargon in your new environment. This helps you to ask more meaningful questions, and displays your willingness to learn. The second is to follow through. It sounds simple, but following through on a task or project that required you to ask questions from the onset shows that you retained the information. This also builds trust and relationship with others leading to more opportunities for you to ask questions in the future.

Point out how this new piece of information or new skill has changed your view or improved your ability to tackle a new challenge.

In my experience, people often hesitate to reveal their learning process due to the fear of being perceived as failures. I believe fast learners embrace failure and do so regularly. Well. I think the best advice that I can provide is to NOT try to demonstrate or show anybody that you’re a quick learner. Learn for yourself and for your own intrinsic desire to improve and advance. In my experience, people who move from inward focus to outward focus, i.e. those who become people pleasers are the ones that have the least impact. Hence, my firm advice to learn and grow all for yourself.

Simply perform what is expected of you, do it with full commitment and energy! Do your best at all times. Results will follow.

While I appreciate people who enjoy learning, seek feedback, embrace challenges, etc, I think it's also incredibly important to note that being a "quick learner" is not important. Learning is important, but learning quickly is not. You can continue to seek knowledge, its a continuous process that I don't believe can be done quickly if you want to be effective or truly knowledgable.
