As a director I try to know the problem the editor has at first; For me, if I'd be sure that the editor got the mood and the form of the film I want, I'll accompany him/her in the process of the editing and his/her creative ideas would be welcome.

I rarely have issues with editors. They're often the unsung heroes of the production process, and they can end up salvaging a poorly-executed shoot. As the old adage goes: "we'll fix it in post", which shifts the burden of the "fix" to the editor. My approach is to discourage that thinking entirely, come up with solutions and suggestions before we sit down in the edit bay, and to protect the editor as much as possible. If there is push back then you can always find a new editor... but good luck on finding your perfect match!!
