What are the most effective ways to prepare for a career in cybersecurity?

Cybersecurity may be a distinct practice, but it is heavily rooted in Information Technology as a whole. Given the fact that cybercrime and intrusions affect all layers of IT, a cybersecurity professional must be well versed in all aspect and dimensions of IT in order to be successful. For somebody starting in this field, one must assess their current general IT skillset and map it to a holistic overview of the IT field as a whole. This includes understanding of networking architecture and cloud computing, OS operations and logging, various database architectures, as well as means in which these systems are abused for an attacker's benefit.

Cybersecurity is a vast field which has many areas where you can become a subject matter expert in long run. You need to start by assessing your current skills. Having basic understanding of IT networks, operating system, application programming along with soft skills like good presentation skills, good communication, analytical and problem solving skills, remaining alert always helps to prepare for a exciting career in cybersecurity

I began my career in Information Security in 1999; undoubtedly, it was a very challenging and, at the same time, exciting start. Today, when analyzing the perspective of someone starting out, you will find that my contribution leads to a very challenging work environment that will take you to new career heights. You will study continuously, meet people who are much better than you (so make the most of it), and enjoy the experience and learning process. Throughout your journey, your career will present many opportunities for growth and diverse roles, so you will understand that security or cybersecurity has many facets and specializations. Reading numerous articles, staying updated with the latest news, and engaging at least once a week in platforms like TryHackMe or similar ones will help in sharpening ethical hacking skills.

With diverse domains within cybersecurity, such as ethical hacking, network security, or cryptography, it's crucial to delineate a focused trajectory. Evaluate career goals and interests to determine the most suitable learning track. Pursuing certifications like CompTIA Security+, Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), or Certified Ethical Hacker (CEH) align with different cybersecurity roles. Choosing a tailored learning path enhances expertise, laying the groundwork for a successful career in cybersecurity.

Considero importante que hagamos uso de marcos de trabajo internacionales y estandarizados como: ISO 27001, 27002, NIST y en base a ellos elaborar políticas adaptadas a la necesidad del negocio. Un error común es que los profesionales buscan implementar estos frameworks al pie de la letra, sin embargo muchas veces el tama?o y la necesidad del negocio no lo amerita.

Find out what you are most passionate about and dive into it. Passion is the best driver there is. It will help with motivation, perseverance and even the way you talk to others about what you love. Never lose that passion, ever!

There are also many careers that sit alongside traditional cybersecurity that require some technical and IT knowledge but do not use them daily. GRC (governance, risk and compliance), sales, marketing and design can all require and use cybersecurity knowledge without requiring a hugely technical background. The biggest element of success in these areas is curiosity and a desire to learn more about the impact and functionality of technology. Talk to developers and technical people, listen to podcasts and webinars, try out new skills. And then you can talk with authority about areas you know about and with humility in the areas you don’t
