1 Define your pilot objectives

Before you start your pilot test, you need to define what you want to achieve and how you will measure it. Your pilot objectives should be aligned with your survey goals and research questions, and should specify what aspects of data quality and validity you want to test. Data quality is key but it’s not the end goal… create value for business/users is king. Moreover quality is relative. Define objectives mean understand what is the expected value, what is the pain point to solve… the best way : -Ask Business the most promising issue they want to tackle -Listen stakeholders to define the scope (data set x decisions/impacted x ops systems involved) -Then define with users what means quality (what for, when and where in the IS) -And now deep dive with combined team (business people, process owner, IT, architect…)

2 Select your pilot sample

The next step is to select a sample of respondents who will participate in your pilot test. Your pilot sample should be representative of your target population, but also small enough to allow for quick and easy feedback. Depending on your survey type and mode, you may choose to recruit your pilot sample from your existing contacts, networks, or panels, or use a random or stratified sampling method. Ideally, you should aim for a pilot sample size of at least 10% of your planned survey sample size, or 30 to 50 respondents, whichever is larger.

Pilot samples are critical. Think of it like riding a bike with stabilizers on, before you take them off. Test your survey with a short number of people to check all of your filters and screening is correct. DM if you would like me to check your for you!

Implementing the learnings from your analysis is possibly the most important step for moving forward. Don't spend so much time & energy on the checking of the data or analysis, that you then rush this stage as setting the next steps is WHY you did the pilot in the first place

6 Repeat if necessary

Finally, you may need to repeat the pilot testing process if your revisions are substantial or if you are not satisfied with the results of your first pilot test. You should use a new or different pilot sample to avoid fatigue or bias, and follow the same steps as before. You should compare the results of your repeated pilot test with your previous one, and see if your revisions have improved your survey quality and validity. You should repeat the pilot testing process until you are confident that your survey is ready to launch to your target population.
