In many areas, there are clubs specifically for networking. Some of these have membership costs, but generally will hold many events per week to give you an opportunity to network. One such place ClubCorp, which owns country clubs in almost every major city. They hold networking events frequently, and I’ve found many jobs, friends, career opportunities, and clients there. There are also many free organizations in most cities, as well, such as toastmasters and the chamber of commerce.

You can also go to the financial area of your city and sit in a coffee shop. Look for people who seem like they wouldn’t mind having a quick chat, or people who are there to network and start by asking them questions about what they do. People love to talk about themselves. This will also give you valuable insight to their network. Ask them about events they attend, and how they got their start. Thank them very much for their time, and if appropriate ask if you can have their email address, and if they would recommend other places to go, or people to meet.

Consider all feedback regardless of the persons title, as you are operating amongst high-value specialists on all levels.
