A safety audit can be conducted internally by qualified staff, or externally by a third-party auditor, depending on the scope and purpose of the audit. A safety audit can help you to measure workplace safety by providing you with a comprehensive and detailed report of your strengths and weaknesses, and recommending corrective and preventive actions.

As audits provide an excellent look into the safety environment at a facility or worksite. It also provides great detail for those tasked with corrective actions or improvements requested to make their work environment safer for their teams. It also creates a platform of data for the safety professional on the backside when they conduct a follow-up of the site and can see where there may be areas of concern that may have been overlooked, ignored or the original assessment needed to be re-addressed and other options may need to be considered.

In my experience a safety audits acts as your detective for what’s working and not working in the safety measures that has been implemented in labs. A safety audits looks at all processes involved including policies, standards, regulatory requirements etc and the lab is adhering to these measures. It goes into the detail of highlighting areas of poor practices and ways to improve practices. It looks at training and competency of the personnel.

On my experience, safety culture is based on behaviours and practices and values. Safety culture is the way in which staff members see safety and the importance of safety in their workplace. Where there rigorous standards and practices in place, staff members take responsibility for their own safety and that of others. A very positive safety culture is where staff have positive attitude towards safety initiatives, they help their employers in making the environment safe for all. A safety culture is where staff are open where transparency is encouraged so that staff can speak up when things go wrong.
